TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,247, dated May 30, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. EATON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sag Harbor, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented .certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is an improved handle d6 signed specially for the tools of engraver-s, but capable of use in connection with any other like tool, particularly those that are subjectto wear, and which it is desirable to keep at a certain length in relation to the handle.
Heretofore it has been common to make graver handles of solid wood, and of varying lengths, the tool being first placed in a short handle, and as it wears away placed in a handle of greater length, and so on, thus compensating for the wear of the tool, but I have found that the repeated changing not only adds to the expense and in manyinstances to the practical destruction of many handles, but lessens or tends to lessen the character of the workmanship, as the engraver must become accustomed to the many new handles before he is enabled to perform the fine workmanship requiredin this art. I have designed a handle which is capable of being used continuously without change, regardless of the length of the graver, and thus the workman, after becoming accustomed to the handle, is required to make no change, and the character of his work is not only improved, but the work itself facilitated, especially in view of the fact that he may adjust his handle in relation to his tool to any desired degree. My invention also avoids the liability of breakage of the gravers which is now likely to happen in the present method.

I do not depart from the usual shapes and sizes now in common use as graver handles,
and my invention is applicable to any style of handle now in use. I bore the handle through its axis, threading the same, and to this threaded opening I fit atube or sleeve 0, and provide a jam nut B, which is adapted to come in contact with the end of the handle A, being threaded on the tube 0, and thus hold the tube and handle in whatever posi tion they may be adjusted. I then place within the tube a cement filling G capable of being softened by heat, and the tool being warmed, is plunged in and is held, after being adjusted to the proper position, until the cement has become hard, and secures the tool in place. In thus applying the tool I withdraw the sleeve from the handle by unscrewing it therefrom, and then after the tool has become set I restore the sleeve by screwingit into the handle. In practice the cement is filled into the tube in such quantity as may be required by the length of the tool, provision always being made for a partial displacement of the contents of the tube by the insertion of the tool end. The proper adjustment may be secured by adjusting the sleeve within the handle, as shown in Figs. 2, and 3, and a further adjustment may be made by warming the cement, after withdrawing the sleeve, withdrawing the tool from the sleeve cavity and allowing it again to harden.
Having thus .described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, the handle A, a sleeve adjustable in relation to said handle and a tool held in said sleeve and adapted to be adj usted in relation thereto,substantially as described.
2. In combination with the handle A, a sleeve, a cement filling within said sleeve, and a tool carried by said sleeve and secured by said filling and adjustable in relation to said sleeve, substantially as described.
