LATHE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1915.
Application filed July 21, 1914. Serial No. 852,153.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Ozone Park, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathe Attachments, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for lathes, and particularly to a device of this class designed to be connected with the tool advancing member of the lathe, and by means of which any number of workpieces or products may be produced of exactly the same dimensions.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters ineach of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool advancing member of a lathe provided with my improved attachment; Fig. 2 a section through the attachment on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and showing the parts in a different position; and, Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1.
The tool advancing member of the lathe, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises a shaft (1 provided with a cross arm or lever b, one end of which is provided, in the construction shown, with a handle b and the other end with a knob or head 72 which may also serve as a handle and, in the practice of my invention, I mount on the shaft a a collar 0 having a set screw 0 by which it may be secured to said shaft in any desired position, and said collar is provided at one side thereof and in the plane thereof with a spirit-level casing provided in its outer side with the usual aperture 0", and in which is placed the usual glass spirit-level tube 0", and the tube 0" is provided centrally of its outer face and centrally of the aperture 0" with a transverse mark or groove 0.
In the use of this device one work-piece or product is first produced of the desired size and in the usual manner, after which the attachment is adjusted on the shaft or into the position shown in Fig. 1, and in the manipulation of the machine to produce other complete products, the shaft 0. is turned so that the attachment or collar 0 will occupy the exact position shown in Fig. 1, and the spirit-level will indicate this exact position of said shaft.
In Fig. 3, I have shown the position of the shaft a when it is drawn back in order to insert another work-piece, and in the operation of the machine, the shaft a is turned to the right as indicated by the arrow w until the attachment or collar c reaches the exact position shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and Fig. 4 also indicates by the arrow 00 the direction in which the shaft is turned in this operation.
It will be understood that the shaft 41 may be reversed to any desired extent in inserting a new work-piece, and the said workpiece may be roughened or prepared for finishing to any desired extent as is usual in the operation of machines of this class, but, in any event, when the work-piece or product is being finished the shaft or must be gradually turned to the right until the attachment reaches the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
My invention is not limited to one attachment of the class described, and the shaft a may be provided with a plurality of such devices as may be found expedient, and as will be understood by all those familiar with the operation of machines of the class referred to.
It will also be understood that the preceding description relative to the manipulation of the arm or lever 7) applies in the operation of finishing the outside of a workpiece or object, but in finishing the inner side of a hollow work-piece or object or boring out a work-piece, the arm or lever b is manipulated as hereinbefore described, but is turned in the opposite direction or to the left.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the shaft of the tool advancing member of a lathe. of a collar which is slidably and rotatably mounted thereon and one side of which is provided in the plane thereof and transversely of presence of the subscribing witnesses this said shaft imd at right singles1 to the axis 18th day of July, 1914. A thereof witi a spirit eve, an a set screw passed through said collar and adapted to JOHN PATTERSON 5 bear on said shaft. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as C. MULREANY, my invention I have signed my name in H. E. Tnomrson.
