A. S. LINDQUIST. ATTACHMENT FOR COMBINATION SQUARES.
APPLICATION FILED SEPLZ, I914.

FIG. 2
WITNESSES v INVENTOR QM 5. & A klzg (7 ABEL S. LINDQUIST, OF SPRINGDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR COMBINATION-SQUARES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application filed September 2, 1914. Serial No. 859,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LABEL S. LiND UIs'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Springdale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Combination-Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and improved attachment for a so-called combination square, which is particularly though not exclusively adapted for use in the laying out of key-ways or grooves for shafts and the like.
The object of the. invention is to provide a simple and economical device which may be readily applied to the ordinary combination squares now in general use. A further object is to adapt the device for use with squares of different sizes, and for determining the line of milling or boring 011 shafts of different diameters. A further object is to so construct the device that it may be used independently of the square for tap ping an indicating mark on a shaft, tube or other metal article.
lVith these objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the drawings here with in which Figure 1 is a combination square with my device appled thereto; Fig. 2 is a view of the centering head detached from the square; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved centering punch; Fig. 4 is a view or modified form thereof which may be used with or independently of the square; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5-5, Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1, 1 indicates the blade of an ordinary square, 2 indicates the centering head, which is attached to the blade in the usual manner and secured in position by set nuts 3 in the manner common to these tools. The blade 1 is also fitted with the usual right-angle or tri-square head 4 having embodied therein the spirit level 5. In instruments of this character as usually em ployed for determining the position of keyways or borings on a shaft, the centering punch of the completed structure is frequently a permanent part of the tool, and is frequently in the way when the tool is to be used for other purposes. In accordance with my invention on the other hand,
the centering punch is readily detachable from the tool as a whole, and furthermore, utilizes the usual structure of the tool as a means for holding it in position thereon. Specifically, my invention comprises a prick punch 6, which slides more or less:
freely in a sleeve 7. This sleeve is provided with a series of longitudinal grooves 8, 9, 10, and 11, by which the punch is mounted on the centering head '2 thereof by engaging one ofthese grooves with the usual strengthening rib 12 of the centering head. The lower ends of the grooves of the sleeve are cut away at 13 to fit the flanges 14 of the arms of the centering head so that. when the sleeve is held by the operators thumb in position on the centering head, it is invariably accurately alined in relation to the apex of the angle at the junction of the arms of the centering head 2. In order that the device may be used with squares of different sizes and in which the strengthening ribs 12 are used in different thicknesses, the several grooves 8 to 11 inclusive of the sleeve differ in width according to these clifferent thicknesses of the strengthening ribs so that the device may be employed with combination squares or with the centering heads thereof of several different sizes.
In the use of the device, 'one of the grooves of the sleeve ,is seated on the strengthening rib 12 of the centering head, and the diverging faces at the lower end of the groove are seated upon the ribs. 14 of the arms of the head; this brings the point of the prick punch (3 exactly in alinement with the blade of the square, and in a position liisecting the angle between the arms of the centering head 2. If new the arms of the centering head are rested upon a shaft, tubing, or the like, and the square is shifted until the spirit level shows the exact horizontal position, the prick punch, which slides sufliciently freely inthe sleeve 7, may be tapped to produce the necessary indicating prick point on the shaft. or the like. The tool may be then shifted to another position on the shaft where a key-way in alinement with the first key-way is to be formed and a second indicating prick point produced. Also, where it is desired to bore a series of holes in the shaft or the like in alinement, the tool may be shifted to the desired points and the indicating marks produced as described.
It will be seen, therefore, that my imthermore, the device is onlyheldin position onthe square the hand of the. operator,
and it" may be readily detached' and laid aside when it is desired touse the square Without it.
In; the embodiment of the device illustrated in; Fig. 4,. itymay. also be used as; a.
prick; punch entirely independent of. the
- square, and: in. this fomnthe. operator may dispensevwith aliammer or other implement for tapping, the; prick punch. 15. In
this case the sleeve; 16 may be of: thestructure; heretofore. described but the prick I pmichiislprovidedwith a. collanor: shoulder 17;; neari sppointed: end and suihciently nears thereto not to,-'limit: materially its use; upon 7 shafts or; rods 1 of, small diameten whein it is -desire'd to; use this device with a; square or s centening head. III-this form; of the device illustrated: in; Eig. .4*,. the. .p.oint..-ofi the} prick punch;i1nay be; placed at the: pointof the workwherje it;is; desired to; make an. impression with thesleeve 1.6.. lifted above the col.-

IVhi-leIa-have described a particularv embodimentof'my invention it is-t0- be understood: that 'it mayi bevaried in details of:

What I claim is: 1 Ii a centering: device, the combination with a blade equipped with a; centering head and: a spirit leveli located at substantial distance from said head; of aprick punch slidably: mounted in ashort sleeve,- said sleeve having means to position it accuratelyi in engagement With said 'center ng heada, 7
25: In. a centering device, the combination -W ll3l1 a blade-havinga centering head adjacent one end: thereof, and: having a sp ritlevel adjustably mounted on said blade, said head having astrengthening rib cast there- 0n-,.and aprick punch slid'ably mounted in aasleeve, saidsleeve being grooved to engage A net/3,510
said rib whereby said prick punch may be positioned and held accurately on said head. i 3. In a centering device, the combination with a blade, having a centering head adjacent one end thereof, and having a spirit level mounted on said blade, of a detachable prick punch slidably mounted in a sleeve,
said centering: head having a rib extend ing trom the apex of the angle thereoi, and
said sleeve having a groove adapted tos fitv grooves and recesses adapted to: fit complementali parts: respectively of centeringheads ofi diflerent sizes..-
5'. A prick; punch comprising a punch proper having a shoulder near the-point thereof,; and a weighted sleeve, slidably mounted on said punch: whereby When said punch; point is positioned, ;-said sleeve may he slid; quickly against said shoulder to cause said point toproduce' an impression, said: sleeve havingguide. surfaces whereby said punch may beaccurately positioned on a centering-head. p
6. A prick punch comprising punch proper, having a shoulder"near the point thereof, and a. weighted sleeve slidably mounted on said punchiwhereby When said punch point is positioned said sleeve may be slidv quickly against said: shoulder to cause'said point to' produce an impression,
said: sleeve also having longitudinal grooves.
