Be it known that 1, JOHN KNOX PHILLIPS, of South Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Combined Stool and Foot-Rest for Use in Shoe-Stores, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture of neat appearance for use in shoe stores, comprising a suitable stool for the salesman, and an improved and convenient foot rest whereon the foot of a purchaser may be placed in being fitted. And a further object is to so arrange the foot rest that when not in use it may be readily brought beneath the stool and securely held therein in such a manner as to be readily released and brought into position for use when required.

A further object is to provide a front panel adapted to receive a suitable advertisement which will be in full view of the purchaser, the panel also serving to, in a measure, conceal the foot rest when the latter is not in use, the whole arrangement being designed to conserve the aesthetic while greatly improving the utilitarian purposesof such an article of furniture.

To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter particularly described and defined in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of an article of furniture constructed in accordance with my invention, the foot rest being shown in position for use. Fig. 2 isavertical section with the front panel removed, the foot rest being shown in the position it occupies when not in use. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation with the foot rest in the position shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail showing in inverted plan view the spring for retaining the foot rest in position beneath the stool.

In constructing the combined stool and foot rest the stool A is made in the main of ordinary shape and design, comprising the top a, and legs I), the latter having suitable rungs o. The front legs of the stool are longitudinally grooved as at a, and to such grooved legs a panel B is fitted, having a frame I), the side members and bottom member of which are let into the grooves a. Below the panel B, a rungd is provided, and to such rung the foot rest 0 is held in such a manner that it may '0, that support and diverge from the standard C of the foot rest proper Ciand through the divergent ends of the said arms the rung 61 passes somewhat loosely. By thus employing arms 0, the foot rest is given a broad bearing or connection with the stool, whereby undesirable lateral play of the foot rest is prevented while a light structure is obtained. The front converging ends of the arms 0', clasp the lower end of the standard 0 and a dowel c, or a screw or the like completes the connection, giving the standard a solid suport. p The top or foot rest proper O is suitably secured to the standardand properly upholstered, asindicated. Further, the form of the foot rest is such that the top 0 has an upward inclination when in the normal position, Fig. 1, this being partly effected by the for mation of the foot rest and partly by reason of being supported at its outer end, on the caster c at a height slightly below its pivotal "connection with the stool.

The standard 0 at what is normally its lower end 0 projects beyond the plane of the top C the arms 0 being likewise thus projected, and the under side of such projected end 0 is somewhat rounded as at 0 this construction enabling the foot rest readily to en' gage the spring catch D which is secured to the under side of the seataof the stool. This spring catch D is preferably formed of wire, which is bent or returned as at d, and a washer and screw e f, serve to clamp such bent end to the stool seat; double pointed tacks g, are also employed to hold the catch in place. The wire is continued from the secured end and formed into a spring coil 01 then bent downward at an angle as at d and then laterally as at 03, its extreme end d being returned to give strength. With this construction, when the foot rest is not needed, the stool is lifted anda slightswinging movement thereof serves to cause the foot rest to swing on its connection and beneath the stool, the latter being inverted if desired, whereby the ends c ,c of

the foot rest will engage the spring catch D, as best shown in Fig. 3. The catch will thus serve to retain the foot rest in place beneath the stool, whereby it may not obstruct the aisle of a store, nor interfere with the ordinary usefulness of the stool.

A slight pressure on the spring catch in the proper direction serves to release the foot rest when needed, whereupon the latter willswing outward by its gravity.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A store stool provided with a spring catch on the under face of its seat and provided with a foot rest 0 pivotally connected at its inner end with the lower rung of the stool and having its outer end G projecting vertically and carrying a rest proper at its upper end; the outer lower corner of the foot rest being extended and rounded as at c c to engage the said catch when the foot rest is swung up within the stool from below, substantially as set forth.

2. A store stool having two of its legs grooved longitudinally, a panel secured in said grooves and closing that side of the stoo1,a rung dbelow said panel and the angular foot rest pivoting at the inner end of its horizontal memher on said rung to swing within the stool behind said panel, and a catch to secure the said rest in its closed position, substantially as set forth.
