To all whom ifmay concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE ADAM HESS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in swinging gates of that character or description in which the horizontal slats are pivoted to the upright hinged or pivoted to the gate post, said upright being provided with a mumterbalance weight connected by means of a rod or bar with the uprights which engage with the opposite gate post.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of swinging gate which shall possess superior advantages with respect to eflicicncy in operation.

The invention consists in the novel constrnction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a gate constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2. is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation.

In the said drawings the reference numerals 1 and 2 designate the gate posts, which may be of any suitable construction. The front gate post 1 is provided with aligned pins 3 near the top and bottom, with which the front uprights of the gate engage when the latter is closed.

The gate consists of a series of horizontal slats 4, the ends of which are embraced by taining a counterbalancing weight of any suitable material. Thesearms are provided with a cross bar 9, with which is connected a rod or bar 10, the other end of which is connected with the front uprights 5.

The'operation will be readily understood. A properweight is placed in the receptacle 8, which will-tend to counterbalance the gate so as to allow the front end to be readily From the above it will be seen that I provide a gate which can be so counterbalanced as to work very easy if desired, and by varying the weights in the receptacle or removing them altogether, the gate will work very hard or require considerable power to raise the same to swing it open which will be found very advantageous under certain conditions or circumstances.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a swinging gate, the combination with the gate posts, and the gate consisting of the rear uprights pivoted to one of said posts, the front uprights and the horizontal rails pivoted to said uprights, of the arms pivoted to the rear uprights, the weight secured to the upper ends of said arms, the cross bar secured to said armsintermediate their ends, and the inclined bar connected with said cross bar and pivotally connected with the front uprights, substantially as described.
