To aZZ whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, LoUIs GRANDPRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks; and I do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it :ppertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in snatch blocks or pulley blocks, and means for attaching the same and is designed more especially for outdoor use.

The invention has for its general object to provide a means embodying such a construction that the block will adjust itself in the direction in which the cord extends so as to lessen the Wear on said cord, and a further object of the invention is to provide the snatch block or casing with a shield or cover which will protect the pulley from inclement weather, and consequent rust of the parts and staining of the cord or rope.

Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved device, illustrating the parts in an operative position. Fig. 2, is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view of the same. Fig. 3, is a detailsectional View taken in the plane indicated by thevdotted line as, w, of Fig. 2, with parts broken away; and Fig. 4, is a view illustrating the position of the snatch block when the bracket plate is fixed in a horizontal position.

Referring by letter to said drawings: A, indicates the bracket plate which may be of rectangular form or other suitable shape and for the sake of cheapness and durability may be of cast metal. This plate is provided with a suitable number of screw holes for the reception of securing screwsas shown. This plate is also provided with a central vertical slot. a, and formed on the outer side of the plate and at opposite ends-of said slot are lug journals 1), which are designed to be placed in alignment with each other, and open at the rear into the vertical slot a. These lug journals are strengthened by flanges c, which are preferably arranged parallel to each other and at the adjacent edges of said lugs.

B, indicates a bracket. This bracketwhich is also of metal, is of approximately T-shape in outline, having its cross branch,d, roundedat opposite ends as shown at 6, so as to be allowed a horizontal swinging movement in the lug journals.v The stem or arm f, of this bracket terminates in a'flat head 9 which is provided with a central transverse aperture h, for a purpose which will be presently described.

0, indicates the snatch block or casing for the pulley D, which latter may be of a construction usually employed. This snatch block which may be of cast metal is provided with the usual aperture 2', for the reception of a stud or pintle to receive the pulley, and is furthermore provided on its upper, longitudinal side, with a shield or cover E, which is designed to protect the interior of the block and also the pulley, as well as the hoisting rope, from moisture, and thereby prevent rusting of the metal and staining of the rope. This block has its side walls extended as shown so as to form two short arms or ears is, which are provided with aligned apertures Z, to receive a bolt or rivet m.

In placing my device for operation or connectingthe parts, the T-shaped bracket should first be passed by the branch f, from the rear of the bracket plate through the slot- 0., bringing the journal ends e, into the lug journals 1). The snatch block should then have its ears placed over the outer end of the stem or branch f, until the apertures therein register, when the bolt or rivet 'm, should be tightened so as to hold the block in the position illustrated in order that the shield or cover E, will always cover the pulley within the rope passing over the same.

It will be readily noted from the foregoing description, that through the medium of the bolt or rivet m, the snatch block may be fixed in the position shown in Figs. 1, and 2, when horizontal position. It will also .be noted that if desired the block may be loosely connected to the bracket through the medium of the bolt or rivet on, so as to swing in a vertical plane and adapt itself to the line of draft.

In whatever position the bracket plate is placed the snatch block may be so adjusted and adjustably fixed that the cover or shield E, will cover and protect the interior of the block and the pulley as Well as the hoisting rope, which is an important desideratu m.
