PULLEY BLOCK Filed Feb. 18,- 1941 Him 6. 417111 INVENTOR WITNESS ATTORNEYS example of the invention,
Patented Sept. 2, 194-1 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in pulley block construction.
An object of the invention is to provide a pulley block of generally improved design.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pulley block constructed to prevent= undue wear or raveling of a line trained thereover.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pulley block of the aforesaid character which is particularly designed to maintain a line in position on the rim of the pulley.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a pulley block of the above character which is relatively simple and durable in construction and efiicient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the improved pulley block,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a plan view illustrating one of the parts of the block.
Referring in detail to the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred ill designates each of a pair of complementary and similar frame sections or cheeks which may be formed of sheet metal and are of ovate contour, having the bottom or breech portions flattened as indicated at H. The opposed side edges of these cheek sections are shaped to form outwardly flaring guide lips I2. At the center portions the cheeks H! are provided with transversely aligned circular openings designed to receive therethrough a gudgeon or spindle l3 formed at one end with an enlarged head 14 and provided at the opposite end with a tranverse bore adapted to receive a cotter pin l5. On one end of the gudgeon is formed a key portion l6 for a purpose which will be hereinafter described.
On the outer face of each cheek It] is secured,
as by welding, a longitudinally extending bar I! arranged face to face with each cheek and having the side edges beveled. At the top or apex end of the frame each of these bars is formed with a slotted knuckle l8 projecting beyond the ends of the cheeks and laterally thereof. These knuckles serve to pivotally engage a U-shaped' fastening member or shackle 19 having apertured end portions disposed to engage the slotted portions of the knuckles and assume registration with the bores of the knuckles. In one of the knuckles is fitted a rivet 20 serving to permanently fasten one end of the shackle therewith. The opposite knuckle carries a removable pin 2| having a flattened enlarged portion 22 at one end and having an aperture in the opposite end adapted to receive a cotter pin 23 transversely through thepin for detachably securing the pin 2| in the knuckle and through one end of the shackle. The reinforcing frame bars I! are provided with apertures registering with the gudgeon receiving apertures in the cheeks, one of said bars having a notch therein to receive the key portion N5 of the gudgeon to preclude rotation of the latter.
Rotatably supported on the spindle or gudgeon I3 between the frame cheeks I 0 is a pulley or sheave 24 having a grooved rim 25. The exterior diameter of the sheave is less than the dimension at any point on the edges of the cheeks from its axis to aiford suitable channel projections completely about the pulley rim.
To the swallow portion of the pulley frame, formed by the normally closed shackle I9, is pivotally connected a guard member 26 embodying a pair of parallel side plates 21 disposed to ex tend transversely of the frame and apertured at the ends to provide ears 28 adapted to assume alignment with the ends of the knuckles I8 to receive the rivet 20 and pin 2| therethrough. These plates are shaped to form tongues 29 projecting at an oblique angle from the inner edges thereof, between the ears 28, disposed to overlie opposed edge portions of the cheeks l0 and bridge the frame transversely at each side of the swallow. The outer edges of these tongues are advantageously rolled, as indicated at 30, to reduce line wear. A web 3! connects with and extends between the complementary plates 21 to solidly connect the same and form an H-shaped structure in top plan, as shown at Figure 4. As illustrated to advantage at Figure 2, the inner part 30 of the web extends so as to assume an inclined position with relation to the centrally arranged outer portion 3|, which is parallel with the sides of the frame.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size,
shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a pulley block, a pair of complementary frame forming cheeks, a gudgeon extending through openings in the cheeks, a sheave rotatably mounted on the gudgeon between the said cheeks, a pair of pivot connections at opposed edge portions of the cheeks, a U-shaped element attached to the said pivot connections, and a guard member connected to the pivot connections having lateral projections bridging the cheeks so as to prevent displacement of a line from the rim of the sheave thereat.
2. In a pulley block having a sheave rotatably mounted between a pair of frame sections, a pair A cheeks at one point and having knuckles thereat,
a shackle having apertured end portions connected to the knuckles by pivot elements, a pair of complementary plates extending transversely of the frame and having their end portions pivotally engaging the said pivot elements, a web extending between and connecting the said plates, and a tongue projecting from the inner edge of each plate and bridging the frame cheeks at each side of the knuckles so as to retain a line on the rim of the sheave at the bridge portions of the frame.
4. In a pulley block, a pair of complementary frame forming side members, a pair of pivot connections at opposed edge portions of the side members, an attaching element connected to the said pivot connections, and a member detachably connected with the said pivot connections having projections bridging the frame members so as to prevent displacement of line from the sheave.
