' D. D. BITTLE CABLE SNUBBING DEVI CE Filed Feb. 6, 1925 x mm ATTORNEYS WITNESSES Patented Sept. 15, 1925.
UNITED STATES DEWEY D. BITTLE, F ORLANDO, OKLAHOMA.
CABLE-SNUBBING DEVICE.
Application filed February 6, 1925. Serial No. 7,433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEWEY D. BITTLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Orlando, in the county of Logan and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable- Snubbing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cable snubbing devices, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is the provision of a cable snubbing device of simple construction which is adapted to be secured on the frame of a derrick or like apparatus for use in checking longitudinal movement of a cable of the derrick or any other cable which may have been engaged with the 0 device.
A further object of the invention isthe provision of a cable snubbing device that will be reliable in use, economical to manufacture, strong and durable, and thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, ref .erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cable snubbing device embodying the invention, showing a cable engaged therewith.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the structure exhibited in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a section substantially along the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
A device embodying the invention in the form now referred by me may be cast or otherwise ormed in a single piece of metal or other suitable material and comprises a body 1 having a flat lower face, as indicated at 2. The body 1 is formed with a pair of attaching portions in the form of cars 3 extending from opposite ends of the lower portion of the body. Each of the ears 3 is provided with a plurality of vertical openings as indicated at 4, for thereception of bolts 5 or like fastening devices for cooperating with a clamp bar 5* to secure the body 1 upon the frame of a derrick or like support.
The body 1 is formed with a longitudinally reduced crown or head portion 6 and has the upper portion thereof enlarged laterally at opposite sides as indicated at 7 and 8 respectively to define a pair of lateral cable engaging members, each of which preferably is circular in vertical sectional contour and is provided with a continuous peripheral groove, such as indicated at 9 in the periphery of the members 7 and at 10 in the periphery of the member 8. The groove 10 preferably is deeper than the member 9 for a purpose to be presently described.
The upper. face of the crown portion 6 of the body preferably is curved convexly longitudinally of the body along an arc of a circle struck by a radius of the same length as a radius of either of the members 7 or 8 and this convexly curved upper face of the crown portion of the body preferably is substantially flush with the upper faces of the corresponding portions of the members 7 and 8. A groove 11 extends in the upper face of the crown portion 6 obliquely across the latter and connects the groove 9 with the groove 10.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The device is designed primarily for use as an attachment for, the frame of a derrick and for checking the movement of the usual socalled dead line of the derrick. Obviously, the device may be secured in any other suitable place for use in checking movement of any rope or like cable. In Figures 1 and 2, a portion of a cable, indicated at'12, is shown. In order to effectively check longitudinal movement of the cable, the latter is wound about the member 7 and then is extended along the groove 11 into the groove 10 and is wound twice about the member 8 as shown in Figure 2. Longitudinal movement of the cable then will be effectively checked.
For the sake of lightness and economy in the use of material of which it is formed, the body may be formed with a relatively large transverse opening, such as indicated at 13, which may extend through the laterally enlarged upper portion of the body centrally of the members 7 and 8.
Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms otherthan that illustrated in the accompanying drawings and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations of the form of the 1 device as herein described and claimed.
I claim 1. A cable snubbing device comprising a body adapted to be secured to a support, said body having the upper portion thereof enlarged laterally in opposite directions, each of said lateral enlargements being circular in vertical sectional contour and each having a peripheral groove extending completely around the enlargement, said grooves lying in parallel planes.
2. A cable snubbing device comprising a body adapted to be secured to a support, said body having the upper portion thereof enlarged later-ally in opposite directions, each of said lateral enlargements being circular in vertical sectional contour and each having a peripheral groove extending completely around the enlargement, said grooves lying in parallel planes, said body also having a groove in its upper face extending 0bliquely of the body and connecting the ,agrooves of said lateral enlargements.
8 A cable snubbing device comprising a body having a pair of oppositely extending attaching ears at its lower end, each of said attaching ears having vertical openings for the reception of fastening devices for securing said body on a support, said body having a head portion formed with opposite lateral enlargements, each of said enlargements being circular in vertical sectional contour and each being formed with aperipheral groove, the upper face of the portion of the body between said enlargements being convexly curved and flush with the corresponding portions of said enlargements and being formed with a groo-ye {extending obliquely thereacross and connecting the peof said enlargements.
