Description

(No Model.) I I CRAIG. CLOTHES WRINGBR.
Patented M 1 fwh m Leon UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. CRAIG, OF GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA.
CLOTH ES-WRING ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 497,635, dated May 16, 1893.
Application filed January 28, 1893- Serial No. fio llfi- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gainesville, in the county of Hall and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glothes-Wringers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in clothes Wringers, and it consists of certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed. a
Reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several views.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved clothes wringer. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same, as mounted on a tub. Fig. 3 represents a side view of one of the springs, in which the rollers are journaled. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the interior of one of the combined roller guards and washer plates;
A represents the top roller, and A the bottom roller, mounted on the shafts a and a respectively. To the end of one of these shafts, as a the crank a and handle a are attached.
B represents one of a pair of U-shaped springs bent at b, and provided with curved portions b, which serve as bearings for the shafts a and a. The outer ends of these springs are curved as at b and terminate in an overhanging lip 19 perforated atb for the end of the coil springB. These springs B should be of sufficient stre'ngthpto hold the rollers firmly together, and are strengthened by the action of the coil springs B, which act upon an advantageous lever arm, extending tub. These holders 0 are provided with arms c and c, the outer one of which c is bifurcated as at 0 and between these lesser arms 0 the cam lever O is pivoted. This cam lever is pivoted at 0 and has a lever armc for pressing down by hand, and a serrated cam face 0 adapted to engage the side of the tub as shown in Fig. 2.
At each end of the rollers, a combined washer plate and roller guard D is provided. This roller guard is provided with a circular aperture d and an elongated aperture d the lower one to fit loosely on the axle a, and.
the-upper to allow the required vertical play to the shaft a of the upper roller A. On the side of the rollers for receiving the clothes,
this washer plate is provided with a projecting lip (1 which comes partly in front of the rollers, and prevents the pieces of material being wrung out from catching between the ends of the rollers and the washer plate.
Byturning the lower roller or the upper the U-shaped springs B bent at b to serve as journalbearings for said shafts, and bent at b with lips b and the coil spring B having ends b engaging in said lips b substantially as and for the purposes described. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. CRAIG.
