STONE-PLANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,719, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed January 27,1892. Serial No. 419,415. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES BIGANESS, of Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Stone-Planer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myinvention is an improvement in the class of stone-dressing machines having a series of cutters that are made to reciprocate and revolve simultaneously.
To this end, my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine embodying my invention, with parts broken away to show the construction of the planer proper and the means of operating it; and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section, on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
A A indicate two horizontal wooden beams, and B a connecting or tie beam, composing a frame which may be secured to the ceiling of a building for suspending the machine. The latter is provided with amain frame 10, which may be of any approved form, but which is provided with braces 11, and a flat top 12 by means of which it may be secured to any suitable support. The lower ends of the frame terminate in boxes 13, in which is journaled a shaft 14, having driving pulleys 15 near each end. .The planer proper is carried by this shaft, and is made up of a plurality of cutting plates 17, which are of a generally rectangular shape having their corners flattened, and the washers 18 which are inserted between the plates to hold them the right distance apart, the plates. and washers being each keyed to the shaft, as shown in Fig. 2, and the plates and washers are held snugly together by the nuts 19, which are threaded upon theshaft l4, and which abut with the two end plates of the planer, thus holding the plates and washers so that they cannot move longitudinally on the shaft. The plates 17 are thus adapted to revolve with the shaft, and their corners as they come in contact with the stone to be planed, will rapidly re duce it and finish its surface.
The planer, that is, the cutting plates 17, is covered by a hood 20, the ends of which are slotted to permit it to sit over the shaft 14, and the hood is supported in hangers 22, which are secured at their upper ends to a frame 23, which is supported in the main frame 10. These hangers 22 are provided with vertical slots 24, near their lower ends, which slots receive the bolts 25, which are secured to the hood and project through it, and the bolts carry nuts 26, by means of which they may be adjusted and held in place in the hangers 22.
At each end of the main shaft 14 is a rounded head 27, which is screwed to the shaft and which enters a concave socket 28 on the lower end of a lever 29, there being a lever at each end of the machine, and these levers extend upward and are each pivoted in a hanger 30, which is secured to the main frame and extends laterally therefrom. The levers 29 project above their pivots, and at the upper ends of the levers are connecting rods 31, the outer ends of which are pivoted to the levers, and the inner ends of which extend into the main frame and are pivotally connected with the eccentric straps 32 on the eccentric 33, which is carried by a shaft 34 mounted in supports 35, which are held to a platform 36 carried in the main frame, as shown in Fig. 2. The shaft 34 is provided with a driving worm wheel 37, which is driven by a worm 38 on the countershaft 39, and the latter is mounted in suitable supports 39 on the platform 36, and extends at right angles to the shaft 34. The
shaft 34 is provided with a driving pulley 40,
to which a belt is applied to turn the shaft.
The planer shaft 14, is revolved at a high rate of speed, and the reciprocating movement of the planer is very slow, owing to the worm and gear mechanism for producing the reciprocating motion, and the reciprocating motion is also short, being merely enough to move the plates 17 longitudinally a distance corresponding to the distance between them, so that the entire surface of the stone to be planed will be operated upon.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The planer shaft 14, is rapidly rotated, thus carrying the cutting plates 17 with it, and the worm shaft 39 is also rotated, which, by means of the worm wheel 37, shaft 34, the eccentric 33, eccentric straps 32, connecting rods 31 and levers 29, imparts a longitudinallyreciprocating movement to the planer. The stone to be planed is first pointed off to its approximate size, and it is then held in a suitable carriage so that it cannot move in relation to the carriage, and is brought beneath the planer 17 so that the cutting edges of the planer plates will contact witli the face of the stone. These cutting plates will rapidly cut away the stone, and as the planer will be moved longitudinally occasionally, the cutting plates will be brought in contact with the entire surface of the stone and will plane it perfectly.
Having thus described my invention, 1' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a revoluble and reciprocating shaft, carrying a series of stonecutting plates and having means for revolving it, of fulcrumed levers whose lower ends are loosely connected with the said shaft, and means for connecting the other ends of the levers and oscillating them simultaneously, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the planer shaft having cutting plates thereon and having means for revolving it as described, of rounded heads secured to the ends of the shaft, 0scillating levers pivoted adjacent to the shaft and having sockets to receive the rounded heads, and an eccentric operatively connected with the oscillating levers, substantially as described.
