THOMAS FLESHER, OF DUNKIRK, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FUR BORING AND MURTISING BLIND-SUITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,093, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS FLESHER, of Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine for Boring and Mortising Blind-Slats, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to mortising and boringmachines for blind-slats and other purposes 3 and consists in producing a combined rotary and reciprocating movement of the cutter by the means as hereinafterfully described.
In the drawing, Fig. l is a front elevation, part in section. Fig. 2 is a plan, part in section. Fig.
'3 is a side elevation of the reciprocating frame.
A is the bed-plate, which supports an upright frame or standard, B, which is curved over at thetop, and has a hanger, (l, attached to its side, which supports a shaft, D, to which the driving-pulley E is attached. One end of the shaft D is supported by an upright standard, F. The frame or standard B has an upright shaft, G secured to its rear, which is provided near the bottom with a small pulley, a, and near the top with a larger one, b. rllhe pulley a is operated by a belt, o, from the main driving-wheel E,which also runs over the counter-pulley ol, as shown. The curved top of the frame B, shown'in Fig. 3, holds the vibrating frame e of the cuttingtool suspended onthepivots f f in the frame B. This frame e has an upright shaft or mandrel, H, pivoted at the top into an adjusting-screw, g, as shown. A collar and ring, h, support the bottom, and a hole and set-screw in the end ireceives the tool. A pulley, j, on the mandrel H operates it by means of a belt, lc, from pulley b on upright shaft G. The front end of the shaft D is provided with a crank, I, which is connected to the reciprocating frame e by a connecting-rod or pitman, J, (see Figs. 1 and 2;) and every time the shaft is revolved the frame e, by this connection, is reciprocated back and forth, thereby causing the tool, which will be made of a peculiar shape, to cut lengthwise at-the same time that it is revolved for boring. The crank I has a slot or series of perforations, m m, (see Fig. 1,) so that the pitman J can be made adjustable higher or lower and thereby produce a longer or shorter motion, and, therefore, a longer or shorter mortise. By disconnecting this pitman J from the crank and fastening it at a given point the machine loses its vibratory function and becomes a perfect boring-machine, in which any boring tool or drill may be used.
As a boring-machine I claim for it great superiority over oth ers. It Works faster and better than any with which I am acquainted. It combines two perfect machines in one-viz., an adjustable vibrating-mortising as Well as a straightboring machine, either or both of which can be used at pleasure. With the tool used it cuts a perfectly smooth mortise, which is much cleaner than those cut with a chisel1 and by means of the pivoted table K the mortise can be cut at any desired angle, the table being providedwith an index to guide it.
I am acquainted with a patent, No. 24,688, for a blind-mortising machine, in which the rotating cutter is mounted in a sliding frame which has a reciprocating movement by a crank; but it is a complicated aair, while mine is exceedingly simple in construction and arrangement, and cheap.
The novelty consists in the arrangement of the pulleys, in the means of producing the vibration, and the combination and arrangement of parts.
I claim- The combination and arrangement of the machine as a whole, consisting of the curved standard B holding vibrating frame e, pivots j' j', the mandrel H, also the hanger or arm G supporting shaft D, with slotted crank I, connecting-rod J, and the pulleys E c b j, operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
' In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS FLESHEB.
