UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SHINN, OF IBERIA, LOUISIANA.
FIRE-WOOD DRAG-,SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,269, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed March 18, 1886. Serial No. 195,770. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SHINN, of New Iberia, in the parish of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Double-GrankDrag-Saw, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction of a drag-saw-driving mechanism, the object of the invention being to facilitate thelateral and longitudinal adjustment of the saw, and to so mount the saw that when being recipro'cated it will swing back and forth in an irregular curve, instead of in a horizontal plane; and to this end the invention consists of certain details of construction and combinations of parts, to be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the construction of my improved form of dragsaw-drivin g mechanism. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of theapparatus.
In constructing such a mechanism as is illustrated in the drawings above referred to, I provide two stationary stands or supports, A A, which project upward at an angle from the floor of the mill, as best shown in Fig. 2. At the rear end of these frames there is arranged ahorizontal crank-shaft, B, provided with connecting-rods c a, that extend to and drive boxes 0 O, that are carried by parallel rods bb, so that as the crank-shaft is revolved through the medium of its 'pulley D the boxes 0 will be reciprocated upon the parallel bars b b. The boxes 0 serve as supports for a horizontal driving-rod, E, and upon such rod E there is loosely mounted a saw arm or pitman, F, the position of said saw arm or pitman being regulated by collars d d, that are arranged upon either side of the bearing of the arm F, each collar being provided with a set-screw, t, by means of which it is clamped to the drivingbar E.
The saw arm or pitman F is formed with telescopically-united sections 6 e e, the saw H being connected to the extending section 6, the inner sections of the arm being provided with set-screws, which serve to bind the parts together when the saw has been properly adjusted for the work in hand.
As indicated in the drawings, the weight of the saw is supported by a fall and tackle, N, so that the inclination of the saw may be varied to suit the exigencies of the case.
The apparatus is started and stopped by means of any of the well-known starting and stopping mechanisms, and when the rotary motion is imparted to the shaft B the drivingbar E will be reciprocated and the saw H driven backward and forward, and as the guiding bars B are mounted on an incline, the heel of the saw will be constantly elevated and depressed as the saw is driven forward and backward; but this motion is modified by the suspending-tackle N, so that in producing the cut the saw travels in an irregular curve, thus effectually clearing the out from sawdust, thereby enabling the saw to out much more rapidly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. In a drag-saw, the combination, with a supporting-frame and inclined ways thereon, of a reciprocating cross-bar mounted on the inclined Ways, a saw-arm adjustably pivoted on the cross-bar, and means for reciprocating the said. cross-bar, substantially as herein.
'held in position by collars d, that are provided with set-screws 13, substantially as described.
his BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SHINN.
