COLUMBIAN EGG-PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,716, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed December 12,1892. Serial No. 454,881. (No model.)
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL BENITEZ, a subject of the King of Spain, at present residing in New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Columbian Egg-Puzzle, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved Colombian egg puzzle. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the outer portion of the egg, showing the inner portion in full. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the inner and outer portions of the egg, showing the position of the balls therein when the center of gravity is at one side of the geometrical center of the egg. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on line 55 in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section showing the balls in a central position, or in the position which they take when the center of gravity is coincident with the geometrical axis of the egg; and Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the divisional portion of the puzzle.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views- The object of my invention is to construct a puzzle which will represent mechanically the feat attributed to Columbus, that of cansing an egg to stand upon end.
My invention consists in a casing of oval section, made inthe shape of an'egg,with two balls or spherical weights inelosed in different chambers and cavities arranged in the line of the axis of the egg, for receiving the balls, the puzzle consisting in rolling the balls into the central pockets so as to bring them into the line of the axis of the egg, the smaller end of the egg being furnished with a slight cavity to give it a very narrow base on which to stand. 7
The casing A, which is made in the form of an egg, is formed of two parts a, b, the part a being provided with a chamber 0, the bottom of which is furnished with a central hemispherical cavity d. The upper portion of the part a is counterbored to receive the lower portion of the part b. In the apex of the part a is formed a slight cavity e, to give it a narrow base on which to stand when the center of gravity is over the said base.
The divisional portion B, which I term a double floored partition, is formed of a hollow cylindrical central portion f, provided with flanges g, g, which together with the walls of the part b of the casing, form the annular chamber h. In the central cylindrical portion of the divisional part B, is formed an aperture 1', which establishes communication ber c in the part a. On the top of the flange g, and axially in line with the cylindrical part f, is formed a collar j, which extends upwardly a short distance and is open upon one'side. In the chamber is which contains the said collarj, and is inelosed by the upper portion of the part b, is placed a ball Z, and in the annular chamber 72. is placed a ball m. The said balls Z, m, are preferably made of heavy material, such as lead or other metal. In the center of the flange g and within the collar j, is formed a spherical cavity '11, for receiving the ball Z. The egg puzzle thus formed will not stand upon either end when the balls Z, m, are not arranged in line above the cavity e. To place the egg puzzle in position to stand upon its narrow base, it must be moved around until the ball on drops through the aperture i into the chamber 0, and rests in the cavity d, and the ball Z is rolled into the collarj and rests in the cavity a.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein described egg puzzle, consisting of the following parts in combination, to wit: the egg-shaped shell formed as shown, a double floored partition arranged and constructed within the shell as shown, and two balls adapted to be operated in connection with the shell and partition as specified, so that the egg will stand on its point only when the two balls are brought into position one above the other, on a vertical line through the long axis of the shell, one ball being on the upper floor of the partition, and the other ball at the lower end of the shell, all as set forth.
