Description

A. P. ANDERSON.
TOY.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 3|. I918.

ANDREW PETER ANDERSON, OF NARNERTH, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOY.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW P. ANDERSON, a citizen of United States, residing at 321 Meeting House Lane, Narberth, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to games and toys, and has for an object to provide a novel for of balancing toy.
Among other features, the inventlon comprehends a toy which is preferably of an egg configuration, in which 1s contained a ball weight similar to a marble, it being ordinarily impossible to stand the egg-like body on end, and have it remain so, until the ball weight has been brought into a certain posltion within the body, whereby the relation of the Weight to the egg-like body will permit of standing the latter on end, thus solv ng the puzzle, or completing the manipulation of the toy to obtain the desired result.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, constituting a part of this specifi-' cation, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the.
views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the toy, showing the internal construction and the general configuration.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the halves of the toy, showing the formation of the end thereof on the inside.
Referring more particularly to the views, the numeral 10 indicates the toy in its entirety, and which preferably consists of'an egg-shaped body formed by two halves 11 which are adapted to have their enlarged ends meet to form a complete egg-shaped body, the body thusbeing hollow. Inasmuch as each half is exactly alike, I will preferably describe one of them, and refer to the halves and parts thereof by similar numerals. The inner or smaller end of the half 11 is formed with an enlarged upstanding portion 12 providing a ledge 13 around which is formed a segmental groove 14, the groove or channel, as itmay be better called, being formed to terminate at a point 15, so as to provide an entrance to the ledge 13, or more particularly to a cup-shaped basin 16 formed in the. top
of said ledge. To one side of the entrance 15 there is provided a baffle 17 which may be secured in the material of the body in any,
Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable manner, as shown, and loosely disposed in the egg-shaped body, or in any one of the halves thereof, is a ball weight 18 similar in shape and construction to a heavy marble. The outer smaller extremity of the half 11' instead of being rounded at the end,
is formed with a flat surface 19, which, however, is quite small, being made of only sufficient area to permit of standing the toy on end, when the body lies in the vertical plane or axis of the body.
Now it will be clear that when the two halves, constructed similarly as mentioned and shown, are securely connected by gluing, or otherwise, with the ball weight therein, it will be impossible to stand the body on either end until the ball weight has been seated upon one of the ledges and in one of the cupshaped basins 16, and in order to accomplish this, it is necessary for the operator to manipulate the toy until he can cause the marble to roll around one of the grooves 14 and pass through the entrance 15, to become seated in the cup-shaped basin 16 on the ledge 13, and when this has been accomplished, the operator by careful manipulation can stand the toy on end on one of the fiat faces 14 thereof, and the same will maintain this upright position.
It will be noted that the baflie 17 is. provided to prevent the toy from being too easily operated to secure the desired result, and that clever manipulation of the toy is necessary in order that the ball weight can be brought in the plane of the vertical axis of the body, whereby the toy can be stood on end, as described heretofore.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising an egg-shaped body, plain faces formed on the outer surfaces of the extremities of the body, ledges providing seats, formed on the inner surfaces of the extremities of the body with annular grooves around the ledges, and formed to provide entrances toward the basins ofthe ledges by around the ledges, and formed to provide entrances toward the basins of the ledges by cutting away portions of the ledges, a ball weight loosely disposed in thobody to be scared on one of Hie ledges. and bames soourod in said body to project into the grooves thereof adjacentthe entranees from the grooves to the basins of the ledges.
3. As a no artiele oi. immul'airturea a toy comprising an eggnabaped body having flat faces on the outer surfaces at each end and an enlarged portion on the inner surfaces of each end. said enlarger-1 portions forming 10 ledges cupped to provide seats with grooves around said ledges. a ball weight loosely disposed in the body. and baflles secured within the, bod to project. into said grooves.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature. lb
