Description

" "ATENT rricn.
JOHN H. BROWN, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,637, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed July 7, 1891. Renewed August 26, 1892- Serial No. 444.174- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. BROWN, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Guns, of which thefollowing isa specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in guns and more particu arly to a gun havinga segmental core surrounded by a wire jacket.
Because of the increased strain at the breech l 'the breech and gradually diminish such tension as the explosive strain is diminished toward the muzzle.
Great diificulty has been found in successfully anchoring the ends of the different shorter layers of wire when terminated intermediate of the ends of the preceding layer, and it is to provide a gun which shall overcome such difficulty and present asmooth exterior finish that I have devised the present structure.
In constructing the gun, I provide a seat for the short layer having the true taper of the gun, and terminated toward the muzzle end by an abutment, then wind the short layer and anchor its end between the last coil and the abutment, then provide a seat for the extended portion of the next succeeding layer forming a prolongation of the surface of the preceding layer, wind the secondlayer and anchor its end, and so proceed until. the full length layer isreached.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 shows the core in side elevation with seats for the short layers prepared and the first layer nearly completed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the second layer completed, and, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the gun as it appears when the jacket is completed. I
and muzzle nuts respectively, and a a, &c., the seats for the short layers, the said seats terminating toward the muzzle in abutm'ents o c, &c. The layer of wire constituting the short coil is represented by D, the next -succeeding layer by D and its anchored end by c 'i \Vhen the core is composed of severallon- .gitudinal segments as herein represented, they may be held in assembled adjustment for the reception of the jacket, by means of addition to these by bands of metal shrunk thereon intermediate of the breech and muzzle nuts, which bands may be turned off toingthe successive seats a a, &c.,' for the re:
then where suchintermediate temporary it will be expedient to form the seats a a, &c., by first forming the seat a, then winding the layer thereon, then forming the seats, then winding the layer D, &c., so that the segments willat no time be relieved of the necessary binding force to hold them in proper position. This specific method of procedure operator to set his tool tothe surface of the preceding coil, tociit the next'succeeding seat. As the final coi-ljof the layer is;laid-in engagement with the abutment, as soon as itbegins to rideon the edge of the preceding coil, the speed of winding may be reduced and the end may be driven-into the gradually narrowing space between the. abutment and previous coil, and therebyfseourely anchored, without slackening the tension or disturbing the smooth continuous plane of the surface of the layer. When the distance between the breech and muzzle nuts is short or when for other reasons there is no need of i temporary binders between the nuts, the sevthebreech and muzzle nuts B and'b, and in-- ception of the several short layers. In cases binding of the segments is found advisable,

A gun having its core or body provided on JOHN H. BRO WN. its exterior with a succession of seats sepa- \Vitnesses: rated by abutments and having the taper of i N ELSON CHANDLER. the gun and 1ayers of Wire Wound on said A.' WV. PORTER.
