IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFAUTURE OF'GANNON.

Be it -known that I, T. N HORNSBY., ci, Simpsonville, inV the county of Shelby, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Constructing Ordnance; and I do hereby declare that the foliowing is a full, clear, and exact description theroof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new andimproved mode of constructing wrought-iron and steel ordnance, which may be made in whole or in part of steel, wrought iron,.or any othcrmetals that are susceptible of bengworkcd into ordnance in conformity to this improvement, which will be more readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, of which `Figure 1 is a horizontal longitudinal view of my improved gun complete.

The sheet msrkedA, in the drawing, is of a breadth equal to the length of the tube B, and it forms the outside of the gun by being wrapped around said tube. It will be seen that one edge of tlie sheet is serrated,
`or that V-shapcd pieces-are cut from itas indicated by l, along its entire length. .This edge encloses the beech-pin of the gun. The opposite edge is then cut off irnan inclined .direction to C, making one cnd narrower than the other. This edge forms the spiral inclinations when' the sheet is wrapped or wound upon the tube. The sheet is also notched inat the letter C deep enough to receive the muzzle-band upon the straight portion of the sheet when wound en the tube, as shown in iig. 1, and designated by the vletter d. The portion between thc letters e and C indicates the amount of wrapping for the muzzle of the gun. .The margin extending from e tof is welded or bruzed to the tube B, lig. 3, having rst beenbevelled down. It is then rolled around the tube whilelhot, and the serrated edge is hammered down over the inclined plane formed by the tube B and the. breech-piece D. E represents the trunnions which are attached tothe band F. G is the trunnionbrace, through the ends of which the trunnions pass. This brace or strap passes round thc breech of thc gun, as represented, and serves to hold the gun in place when it reeoils from the discharge. H is the breech-band, which is thicker at the breech end than at the other, in order to tit the inclined surface formed by hammering and welding down the end of the tube B, -and the serrated portion of the scroll-sheet A over the linclined por? tion of the breech-pin. This breech-band is *composed of a'sheet of metal wound round the breech and forming a scroll, the outer end of which is welded or brazcd After the breech'band is secured in its place, as before described, the cavity in the breech J is lled with melted metal of any kind which is sudiciently hard, and
which will melt at a less degree of heat than the metal of the gun, in order to permeate the intersticcs and present a mass of solid metal to the inner surfac'eof the breech-band H.
By this method of manufacture the liability of the gunto aw is greatly lessened, and it greatly exceeds the proportionate strength of guns of the saine calibre which are cast: It -combines strength, lightness, and cheapness of construction, and. they can bo manufactured with great rapidity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Constructing cannon, in the manner described and of the several parts specified, consisting of thc tube B, havingnotchcs gli, notched sheet A, bands rl F, breech-piece l), trunnion-bracc G, brccchJiand H, and breech J, as herein set forth. A 5
