SAFETY WATCH-POCKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,820, dated April 18, 1893.

Be it known that I, HERBERT JoEL MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at IowaFalls,in the county of Hardin and Stateof Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety VVatch-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to safety watch pockets or watch covers adapted to prevent dust from getting into a watch, and it has for its object to provide a spring guard so constructed as to close the mouth of the pocket and completely surround and clasp the protruding stem of the watch whereby the watch is held steadilyin place and efiectually protected from the access of dust.

In the annexed drawings illustrating the invention-Figure 1 is a View of my improved safety watch pocket or cover. Fig. 2 is a view of the improved spring guard for closing the mouth of the watch pocket.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a small bag or pocket adapted to receive and form a dust excluding cover for a watch. This bag, pocket or coverl is preferably made from buckskin, chamois or similar soft and flexible material, as usual.

For the purpose of making the mouth of the pocket self-closing and adapt it to close completely and securely around the stem of a watch a spring guard of peculiar construction is provided. This spring guard and pocket closing device iscomposed of a single piece of wire bent into the form shown in Fig. 2 and having its ends permanently secured together by solder, or otherwise. It will be observed that the spring guard 2 comprises two parallel bars '3 and 4 adapted to extend the entire length of the mouth of the pocket. These bars 3 and 4 are provided at their ends with depending arms 5 and 6 merging in coil springs 7 and so arranged that the arms of one bar cross the arms of the other bar, whereby an effective spring action is provided for normally holding the guard bars in a closed position. About midway the length of each bar 3 and 4 is formed a bend or recess 8 having its concavity presented toward and opposite the concavity of the corresponding bend or recess of the other bar.- The spring guard is securely attached within the mouth of the pocket 1 by any suitable means such as sewing, cementing or otherwise, preferably in such manner as to cover and conceal the guard. By means of the bends or recesses 8 in the parallel guard bars a clasp is formed that will completely surround and securely hold the protruding stem of a watch placed in the pocket 1 and this construction of the guard also enables the bars 3 and 4 to come closely together after the watch has been inserted. It will thus be seen that the 0011- struction of the self-closing spring guard with its bends or recesses 8 is such as to cause the mouth of the pocket 1 to close securely around the protruding watch stem in such a manner as to hold the watch in place and effectually prevent the entrance of dust and dirt.

The pocket 1 may be carried loosely in the pocket of a vest or other garment or may be secured therein and when so attached the recessed spring guard will serve to prevent the watch from dropping out or being unlawfully abstracted.

vIt will be understood that the coiled springs 7 may be made with any number of coils, as may be desired, and these coils will be arranged to lie fiat or close together in such a manner as to avoid any bulging.

WVhat I claim as my invention is 1. A spring guard for a watch pocket, consisting of substantially parallel guard-bars 3 and 4. having extremities bent substantially at right angles thereto and formed into coils 7 which operate as springs to close the guardbars laterally toward each other, the guardbars being provided with bends or recesses 8 arranged opposite each other to grasp and hold the stem of awatch, substantially as and for the purpose described.
