HAME-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,617, dated April 18, 1893.

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. SCARLETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Augusta, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings for Hame- Tugs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in couplings or fastenings for haine tugs, the 0bject being to provide an improved construction whereby superior results are obtained with respect to simplicity and economy, and at the same time a Very eflicient couplingr is provided which will be more durable in use and render the strain upon the draft animal less severe.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a view of a llame with my im proved tug coupling connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view of the tug iron. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the plate secured to the hame to which the tug iron is connected.
In the said drawings the reference numeral l designates the hames which may be of any ordinary or usual construction.. Secured to each of the haines is a metal plate 2, having bosses 3, provided with curved or hemispherical recesses. At the rear this plate is provided with a circular concave recess to receive a plate or socket 4, provided with a circular recess 5.
The numeral 6 designates a metallic bar` having its front end tapered and rounded as seen at 7, and provided with a ball S, which fits between the bosses 3, and plate 4, so that a ball and socket joint is formed. This bar is provided With loops 9, and a pin 10,130 receive the hame tug l2. It is also provided with a series of holes 13, for the passage of rivets or other devices by which the tug may be fastened thereto.
From the above it will be seen, that I form a ball and socket coupling between the haine and bar 6, which will in practice be found to be very efficient, affording more comfort to the draft animal and lessening liability of ehafing. It will also be more durable in use and consequently less expensive.
Having thus described Inyinventiou, what I claim is- In a haine tug coupling, the combination with the plate adapted to be secured to a hame, provided with bosses having curved or hemispherical recesses, and having at the rear concave recesses, and the plate or socket itting in said concave recesses and having a circular recess, of the tug iron having a curved end provided with a ball or sphere, substantially as described.
