DIE-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,214, dated April 11, 1893.
Application filed March 21 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Die-Stocks;- and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in die stocks, but more particularly to an attachment for use in connection with die stocks and the like whereby their ease of operation in certain situations is enhanced. The die stock as ordinarily made is provided with two or more outwardly extended handles by means of which the stock is turned around the pipe to be threaded, and where space permits, this is the simplest and most satisfactory means for operating the tool. It sometimes happens, however, that the pipe to be threaded is so situated that space for the free sweep of the handles cannot be had. In such a case as this a ratchet stock is usually employed when it is obtainable.
It is the object of my invention to provide for use in connection with ordinary die stocks, a ratchet handle of novel construction, which can be readily attached to or disconnected from the stock, thereby to all intents and purposes making each stock answer the purpose of two different tools; and with these ends in view my invention consists and resides in the construction and the several combinations of co-operating elements presently to be described and then recited in the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains mayfully understand its construction and method of operation I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which,

As shown more particularly in Fig. 5 the Serial No. 425.730- (No model.)
the pipe and is provided with a tubular ex-- tension or sleeve 4whereby the pipe is guided toward the threading dies 5 which appear at Figs.1 and 5. Upon thebase of the die stock are formed opposing shoulders 6, and upon the tubular extension 4 are casta pair of lugs 7 for the purpose presently to be explained. The screws 8 and 9,,which appear at the bottom of Fig. 2, are designed to adjust and secure the dies, but, as heretofore stated, this construction is immaterial and forms no part of my present invention.
The ratchet attachment which is adapted to fit upon and co-operate with the stock just described, consists primarily of a ring or sleeve 10 provided on its lower edge with two pairs of legs 11, which legs seat against the shoulder 6 when the ring is in position. This ring is also provided upon its'periphery with ratchet teeth 12, and it is also provided with lugs 13 which are intended to co-operate with the external lugs 7 upon the tubular extension to hold the sleeve 10 in firm engagement with said extension. To prevent the sleeve 10 from rising upon the tubular extension, I provide a locking device which preferably consists of a set screw 14 insertible into a threaded seat in one of the lugs 7. It will be understood from the foregoing description that when in position, the sleeve 10 to all intents and purposes becomes a part of the tubular extension on the stock.
For the purpose of turning the sleeve and stock I provide a ring 14* made in two sections fastened together by pins or rivets 15, which surrounds the sleeve 10 and incloses and is guided upon the teeth 12, which, latter, as shown by the dotted lines at Fig. 4, project beyond the inside line of the ring. To this ring is attached, or it may be formed integral therewith, a shank 16 provided with a socket 17 for the insertion of a handle. Within this shank is pivoted a double-faced pawl 18, the face of which behind the pivot is angular, and is engaged by an oblique-faced spring-actw ated stud 19, whereby either face of the pawl, as may be required, is held against the ratchet teeth 12 upon the sleeve. To shift this pawl ,it is only necessary to depress the outwardly extendingend which projects, as at a, beyond the exterior of the ring,'until the angular face of the pawl passes the face 19, when said stud will act on the pawl in the reverse direction and the ratchet will be changed from a right hand to a left hand, or the reverse, as the case may be.
When a ratchet stock is required to be used the handles are detached from the ordinary stock and the ratchet sleeve slipped over the tubular extension and there seou red by means of the set screw 14. As heretofore stated, the engagement of the legs 11 against the shoulders 6 supplemented by the engagement of the lugs 13 with the lugs 7 securely hold the two co-operating parts in position. Then, by a vibratory movement of the handle on the ratchet ring, the sleeve and stock may be turned intermittently until the threading of the pipe is complete. Then by reversing the position of the pawl the stock may be in the same manner removed from the pipe.
I claim.
1. The combination with the stock having thereon the tubular extension and having also abutment shoulders, of the sleeve provided with ratchet teeth and having legs for abutment against the shoulders, and the ratchet ring providedwith a handle and with a pawl connected to and adapted to operate the sleeve,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the stock having a tubular extension and provided with opposed pairs of abutment shoulders, of the sleeve 10 having legs 11 and ratchet teeth 12, the two-part ring 14: surrounding the ratchet teeth, the pivoted double-faced pawl adapted to co-operate with the ratchetteeth, and a suitable handle for the operation of ring 14.
3. The combination with the stock having a tubular extension provided with external lugs 7, of the sleeve 10 having lugs 13 and teeth 12, the two-part ring 14. surrounding the sleeve and ratchet teeth,a double-faced pawl carried by the ring, a spring plunger for engagement with the pawl, and a suitable handle, all arranged substantially as described.
4. The combination with the stock having a tubular extension provided with lugs 7, of the sleeve 10 having legs 1l,ratohet teeth 12, and projecting lugs 13, the two-part ring 14: surrounding the sleeve and inclosing the teeth, the double-faced spring-actuated pawl 18, and a suitable handle, the parts being combined and adapted to operate substantially as specified.
