Description

(No Model.)
O. W. ROBISON. DEEP WELL TOOL.
No. 448,165. Patented Mar. 10,1891.
NITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
CHARLES XV. ROBISON, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO ROBERT E. ROBISON, OFSAME PLACE.
DEEP-WELL TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,165, dated March 10, 1891. Application filed September 29, 1890. Serial No. 366,444. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Romson, of Allegheny city, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Deep-Well Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a drillingtool provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation of the tool, showing the spring locking-tongue. Fig. 3 is a perspective end view of one section of the tool. Fig. 4t is a horizontal section on the line IV IV of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the washer.
My invention is designed to afford means for detachably locking together and preventing accidental separation of the parts of tools and rods used in drilling deep wells, such as oil and gas wells. Such tools or rods are commonly secured together by screw-couplings, and the frequency with which they become detached in the well and necessitate tedious and expensive fishing operations to recover them makes my invention of great value to the trade.
In the drawings, 2 3 are the sections of a drilling-tool, adapted to be secured together by a screw-threaded projection at the end of one section, which fits into a corresponding socket at the end of the other, and around the socket and projections are annular seats or shoulders, as shown.
To the end of one of the sections on the seat around the threaded portion I fix, with screws or otherwise, a divided washer 4, of spring metal, which is set so that one of its divided ends Z) shall constitute a tongue tending to project outwardly, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4E, and 5. The other section of the tool is formed at its end with one or more notches 5, made in the form of ratchet-teeth and adapted to engage the projecting end of the washer when the sections are turned in a direction opposite to that in which they are screwed together; but to slip over said end when the parts are turned in the other direction. In practice I prefer that there should be two of these notches, which may be made at diametricallyopposite points on the periphery of the tool end.
The operation is as follows: In screwing the sections of the tool or rod together, after the projecting tongue of the washer comes in contact with the end of the section to which it is not fixed said tongue will slip freely over the notches 5, but will prevent the sections from being unscrewed, for, if their turning be reversed in direction, the tongue on meeting one of the notches will engage its abrupt end and will then look the parts. This constitutes a most efficientmeans for preventing accidental separation of thetool-sections when in use in the well, and therefore makes the drilling operation saferand less apt to be attended with the delay and expense of fishing. hen it is desired to unscrew the sections the bite of the washer may be released by inserting a chisel or other tool into the notch above the end of the tongue and forcing the tongue down to the level of the washer. \Vhen the parts of the tool are screwed together, they bear vertically upon the washer and confine it securely in place, so that sand and dirt cannot enter behind it and force it out laterally. The security and compactness of the joint thus occasioned form the principal feature of advantage of my invention.
I claim- The combination, with the sections of a deep-well tool having-a screw-threaded projection and a surrounding shoulder or seat on one part and a corresponding threaded socket and surrounding seat on the other part, of an annular locking-washer having a projecting spring-tongue, being adapted to encircle the threaded projection and fixed laterally to the seat of one of the said parts, and the other of said parts having on its seat a ratchet notch or notches adapted to engage with said tongue, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of September, A. D. 1890.
CHARLES XV. ROBISON.
