GLUE-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION formingpmt ofl Letters Patent No. 495,054, dated April 11, 1893.
Application mean@ i4, 1392.
clear, and exact description of the inventiomw such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lily invention relates to improvements in presses especially adapted for lholding glued boards together; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and easily manipulated device adapted to clamp material or stock of diierent sizes, `and which can be readily moved from place to place if desired.
With these ends in view, myinvention consists in the combination with a suitable base or bed, of a vertically slotted standard preferably formed by two parallel spaced uprights rigidly secured to said base, a horizontal graduated clamping bar having one end fitted within the slot of said standard and provided with a stifling clamping block, and an operating lever fulcrumed on the clamping bar and adapted to move the clamping block longitudinally thereon.
My invention further consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the acoompan ying drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of my improved press. Fig. 2 is a vertical. longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the clamping bar; and Fig. i is a detail view of the operating lever.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several gures of the drawings, referring to Which- A designates the base or bed of my improved press, which base is mounted on suitable legs B rigidly attached thereto or formed integral therewith; and to one end of said base are rigidly attached two parallel standards or uprights C, connected at their upper ends by a cross head D. It desired a single slotted standard may be substituted for the parallel standards C.
Above the base A is arranged a horizontal clamping bar E which is graduated from an Serial No. 433,058. (No model.)
intermediate point of its length to one end and in the side edges of such graduated portion are formed a series of aligned notches F conforming to the graduations on 4said bar, the inner end of said bar tting in the slot of the upright and the notches of the bar receivine,r the inner edges of the sides of the standard C. The outer end of the notched bar E is bent upon itself and extends parallel to the main body of said bar. Between the overhanging portion G, thus provided in the clamping bar E, and the main body ot' said bar is fitted a clamping jaw or block H which is capable of a longitudinal movement on the bar and is provided with a central longitudinal slot I and the lateral projecting lugs or ears K which extend beyond the sides of the clamping bar E. The overhanging portion G ot the bar E tits in a groove or depression formed in the upper surface of the clamping block Il, and said overhanging portion is attached tothe body of the clamping bar E by means of a vertical pin or rivet L. Around the pin L is fitted a sleeve L and between such sleeve and the rear end of the slot I in the jaw H is arranged a coiled spring M. A pin or rivet N connects the overhanging por Lion G of the clamping bar E with the main portion of said bar in rear of the clamping block I-I, and on the pin is fulcrumed an operating lever O provided with a suitable han*- dle and with an enlarged cam or eccentric head which bears against the rear end of the clamping jaw I-I. In the head of the lever O are formed two slots P which are separated by a lug or stud P through which the pivot pin N extends. By this construction the lever 0 can be turned so as to lie at right angies to the length of the bar E, the end of the latter bar taking into one ot the slots P.
In using my improved press, the clamping bar E is inserted edgewise in the slot formed in the vertical standard C and adjusted to bring the desired notches in line with said standard, after which the bar E is turned down into a horizontal position so that the edges of the standard C enter the notches in the clamping bar, thus holding said bar against longitudinal movement. The stock to be clamped is placed between the standard C and the movable clamping jaw H. By operating the lever O, the jaw His moved for- ICO Ward and the sections composing the stock are forced closely together. Any desired number of clamping bars can be inserted in the press, and the bar E can be adjusted 1ongitudinally on the base or bed to clamp stock of different widths.
The advantages of my improvements will be readily understood and appreciated `by those skilled in the art.
I am aware that changes in the forni and proportion of parts and details of construction of the devices herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention may be made Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the `right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of the same.
Having thus fully ydescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by `Letters Patent, is-y 1. In a glue press, the combination of `a base,
a slotted standard rigidly attached to the base,
\ a clamping bar fitted in the slot in the standard, and a clamping jaw carried by and adaptf` ed to be moved longitudinally on the clamp-` ing bar, substantially as described.
2. In a glue press, the combination of a base, a slotted standard rigidly attached to said base, a graduated clamping bar provided in opposite edges with a series of aligned notches adapted to receive the vertical sides of the standard, a clamping jaw mounted on the clamping bar, and a lever fulcrumed on said bar and 'adapted to move the clamping jaw longitudinally thereon, substantially as described.
3. In a glue press, the combination, of abase, a slotted standard rigidly secured to one end of said base, a horizontal clamping bar engaging with said standard and having one end bent upon itself, aslotted clamping jaw arranged between the body and overhanging portion of the clamping bar, a pin passing through the slot in the jaw, a coiled spring arranged in theslot in rear of said pin, and a lever f ulcrumed on the clamping bar and provided With a cam or eccentric portion which bears against the rear end of the clamping jaw, substantially as described,
4. In a glue press, the combination of a base,
`a slotted standard attached tofsaid base, the
clamping b ar engaging with said standard, a`
movable clamping" jaw carried by said bar, and a lever fulcrumed on the clamping bar and having a cam or eccentric near one end, said cam or eccentric being provided on opposite sides of the fulcrum ot' the lever with slots, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
Intes'timonywhereof atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' ALBERT E. PALMER.
