UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. DEPEVV, OF CANANDAIGUA, NEWV YORK.
WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 495,029, dated April 11, 1893.
Applicatiun filed February 26, 1892. Serial No. 422,862. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern; i
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. DEPEW, a citizen of the United States, residing atOanandaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and useful \Vire Fence, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clips for wire fences, and especially to a clip for securing the crossed wires in a panel and the runners of a panel to each post, and has for its object to provide a-clip that is normally provided with a re-entrant looped bend and elongated parallel legs to adapt the same to be mounted over rounded surfaces and form a connecting clamp or tie; and with this object in view, theinvention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an isometric view of a fence showing manner of securing together the vertical stays and line wires of a fence. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a detail; and Fig. 3 is a like view of my clip.
Numeral 1 denotes a line wire, 2 a vertical stay or post, and 3 the limbs of a clip. The clip is formed of wire by stamping or bending and it is an object of the improvement to provide fastening clips adapted to be formed by machinery and thereby made ready for convenient application in fence building. Each clip when formed has abend 5 at or near the center of the piece of wire or metal of which it is made. This bend will be of such relative dimensions that it will readily receive the vertical stay. From this bend 5 the wire on each side is extended a distance approximately equal to the sum of the diameters of stay and. line wires of standard sizes to a bend terminating at 4, the direct distance between the wire at the bend 5 and the clip members 3 being by preference equal to the sum of the diameters of the stay and line wires. A plane passing through that portion of the wire forming bend5 is at approximately a-right angle to a plane tangential to the curves e at their ontermostpoints.
A clip made as above described can be placed about a stay and dropped on the line wire, where it will freely hang in such position as to present the members 3 for the tool to twist the same together thus avoiding the manipulations required in bending wire about the stay and line wires as heretofore practiced.
The particular form and dimensions herein set forth may be varied without sacrificing all the ad vantages of the improvement but they are deemed best as they insure that the clip shall be suitably supported and held when dropped into position preparatory to twisting the members 3 together.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The wire clip for securing together theline and cross wires of a fence consisting of the piece of wire having the bend 5 and a bend4c in each member 3 the wire at said bend 5 being at a distance in direct line from the plane of the members 3, about equal to the sum of the diameters of said line and cross wires, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE M. DEPE W.
