UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS LLOYD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BURNISHER.
SPECIFICATION `forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,872, dated April 4, 1893.
Application tiled November 18, 1892. Serial No. 452,370. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LTEoMAs LLOYD, of Boston,'in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Burnisher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of burnishers which are adapted to be operated by hand, and which are used for burnishing or polishing boots or shoes, metal goods, or in fact, any article which is brightened or burnished by rubbing.
The object ot my invention is to produce a cheap and simple article of this kind which is adapted for use in burnishing any object, and which may be easily held in and operated by the hand.
To this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a broken side elevation, partly in section, of a form of burnisher embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
As shown in Figs. l and 2, the burnisher is provided with a cushion having a casing 10 which is stuffed with Va filling 1l of sponge,
hair, or other fibrous material capable of clamping device, which forms the back and handle of the cushion, is secu red firmly thereto and this device has a base piece 14 which extends longitudinally through one side of the cushion and the base piece 14 has a convex outer surface, as shown in Fig. 2. A top piece 15 which has a concave inner side is adapted to tit snugly upon the base piece 14 and bind the cushion casing rmly between the two parts 14 and 15. The base piece and top piece are held together by screws or bolts 16 which project outward through the base piece and top piece and are provided with thumb nuts 17. The top piece 15 is provided with a suitable handle 18 which is firmly ixed to the central back portion of the said piece. It will be noticed that this clamping device and handle may be easily applied to a cushion, and when one cushion is worn out, it may be applied to another.
lf desired, au air cushion may be substituted for the form of cushion shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patente A burnisher comprising a tubular casing closed throughout its length and at its ends, and provided with a yielding filling, the base piece or backing 14 extending longitudinally through the casing along one side thereof and provided with upward projecting bolts 16 16, the handle 1S having' a top piece 15 apertured at its ends for said bolts and nuts on the bolts clamping the top piece 15 to the base or backing 14, substantially as set forth.
