FILE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,498, dated March 28, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW W. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pierce City, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new and improved file holder; and it has for its object to provide a file holder which may be adjusted to hold files of different lengths, and to secure a file loosely and rotatably in the holder, which, permits said file to vibrate, and adjust itself to the edges of the saw teeth, and file them evenly and parallel. Another object of securing the file rotatably in the holder is that the corners and sides of the file may be used without the necessity of removing it from -the holder in order to turn it. Afurther object of securing the file rotatably in the holder, is that it enables the user to turn the holder sidewise while filinga saw or other object, in order to observe the operation and position of the file.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter-described and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a device in a position that the user may observe the operation of the file.
In the construction shown I employ two handles a and a, and connect them on their upper sides by a bar I). The handle Ct is made longer than the handle a, as it is designed to be grasped with the righthand, the handle a being usually held between the thumb and forefinger of the left, it need not be as large as handle a. The bar I) at one ofits endsis secured rigidly to one of the handles, in the drawings it is shown secured to handle a, but, as is evident, it may be secured rigidly to handle a with equal advantage. The other end of bar I) is adjustably secured to handle a by means of screws or bolts 0 passing through a slot bformed in the bar I), and into the handle a. In the inner ends of the handles are secured sockets d and thesesockets have conical recesses formed in their centers, in which the ends of the file fit. The ends of the file are made approximately conical shape to fit the recesses formed in the sockets d in order to permit them to turn when secured therein. It will thus be seen that the handles may be adjusted different distances apart in order to receive files of dilferent lengths, by loosening the screws 0, and adjusting the handles toward or from each other as the case may require. And as it is evident, the file may be revolved while secured in the sockets, in order to use its diiferent sides and corners. The bar b is cut away on one of its sides as at b? in order that the holder may be turned sidewise over the work when the operator is desirous of observing the position and operation of the file. This bar (2 may be a thin rod, placed to one side of the center of the handles if. desired which would obviate the necessity of cutting the recess b.
From the foregoing it will be readily understood that my invention possesses many advantages, and is of exceedingly simple construction and efficient in operation.
I desire it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein described as change may be made without departing from the invention in the least, as the sockets cl may be'made integral with the handles, and a dilferent form of adjusting device for the handles may be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In afile-holder, the combination of apair of handles or holders provided with sockets in their inner ends and a file having its ends rounded and held in said sockets, so as to rotate freely therein and-be held against longitudinal movement, substantially as described.
2. In a file-holder, the combination of a pair of handles provided with rounded sockets and connected together and an angular file having its ends rounded and held looselyin said sockets, whereby the file, will be permitted to rotate freely independently of I the handles, and be held against longitudinal movement, substantially as described.
