No. 494,382. Patented Mar. 28, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOYT P. PARMELEE, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,382, dated March 28, 1893.
Application filed December 8, 1891. Serial No. 414,406. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOYT PERRY PARMELEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bookbinding, of which the following is aspecification.
My improvement relates to the manner of connecting a finished book cover composed of mating stiff sides and a flexible'back, with a bound volume of folios, and my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of a reinforcing flexible strip with the bound folio and the back portions of the stiff covers, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 shows the rear part of a volume of folios fastened together by means of staples that extend through from one side to the other, a flexible strip extended around the back of the volume and also fastened by means of staples that extend through the flexible strip and the folios in such position relative to the flexible strip that portions at its parallel edges will be free and adapted to be fixed to the shaft portion of a finished cover as shown. Fig. 2 shows two flexible strips fastened to the bound volume of folios, in the same manner as shown in Fig. l, as required to cover the staples in the volume and to adapt the volume for having a finished cover attached thereto by means of the two flexible strips in place of one strip. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a bound volume of folios and a finished cover attached thereto by means of a single flexible strip. Fig. 4 is a view of a book showing the one end complete and a part of the cover and also a part of the flexible strip removed to show their relative positions of the different parts. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a bound volume showing that portion of the flexible strip that is fixed to the inside face of one of the stifi sides of a finished cover that is thereby fastened to the bound volume of folios prepared for thus attaching the finished cover thereto.
A represents a bound volume of folios and 13 a flexible strip fixed thereto to extend from end to end in such a manner that a portion of the strip will be free its entire length and adapted to overlap the inside portion of the stiff part of a finished cover as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
To fasten a finished cover to a bound volume of folios prepared therefor by means of a single flexible strip as shown in Fig. 1, or two strips as shown in Fig. 2, I simply apply adhesive matter, glue or paste, to the outside surfaces of the free portions of the flexible material and then place the finished cover over the bound folios in such a manner that the rear portions of the inside faces of the parallel stiff sides of the cover will overlie thefree portions of the flexible material and adhere thereto, when the glue or paste is dried and hardened and the entire flexible back that connects the two stiff sides of the cover will be free from the back of the bound volume of folios.
I claim as my invention- In a bound book, series of folios fastened together in overlying position by means of stitches or staples as shown and described, a flexible strip, extending the entire length of the folios, fixed on the rear portions of the outside folios to cover and reinforce the stitches and staples that hold the folios together in such a manner that a portion of the entire length of the strip overlying the outside folio will be free and adapted to be fastened its entire length to the inside of a finished cover fastened to the outside surface of said free portion of the strip, and all the parts permanently connected, substantially as shown and described for the purposes stated.
