Description

J'. INGRAM.
SHUTTBR GASE.
Patented Aug. 15, 1865.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES INGRAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y-.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-CASES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 49,4 ll, dated August l5, Lf'ti.
.To all whom 'it 'may concern; I
Be it known that I, JAMES INGRAM, ofthe city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Cases; and I do hereby' declare the following to be a i'ull, clear, and exact description ot' the said invention, reference being had to the annexed draw` ings, making part ot' this speeitication. wheren1- Fignrc 1 is a plan ot' my shuttereasc, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section ot' said case.
Similar letters denote the same parts.
The shutters for the windows and doors of stores have heretofore usually been contained in a case or box at the side ot' the store or stood up in some out-ottheway place during the daytitne. In this condition they are genorally ex'posed to the action ot the weather and to other injury, and in eases where the shutters are lowered down into a stationary case in the. sidewalk they are. often injured by being dropped sonic distance into the case.
The nature ot' my said invention consists in a slidingr shutter-ease acted on by a screw, so that the case can be lowered al'ter the shutters have been placed in it, or raised previous to the shutters being taken out. of said ease. By this device tite shutters are entirely excluded from the action ot' theaveather and the handling of them facilitated, so that they are not as liable to be broken as heretofore.
In the drawings, c isa frame ot' suitable size and shape, at the upper end ot' which is a flange, b, that is tobe set into the Hag-stone of the sidewalk, or level with the area or stone over the area, so that the frame a shall be entirely below and out ot' the way. Within the trame a is the slitting shutterease, formed ot' the bottom c and angle-pieces Z d, and these angle-pieces d d .are connected to each other by the bars or frame e.
ffare cross-pieces from the side bars ot" the sustain the screw g, collars heilig provided at t1', so that the screw q is kept in position between the cross-pieces ff.
h is a cross-.bar from the trame a, carrying the nnt ofthe screw g, and i: is a similurcrossbar, acting as a guide to thel lower end of the screw g.
It will now be evident that it t-he screw g is rotated in the stationary nut in /i the entire shutter-case will be raised or lowered, and with it the. shutters that may be contained in it. These shutters are represented at l.
The screw q may be extended up, as shown at. I, and be operated by a crank-handle placed upon its upper end, or, it' the distance across is too far to reach conveniently, the motion may be communicated from the crank -m through the gears n., 0,1), and q,- or the shaft s, carrying` the gears o and p, may have a square at the end for the reception ot' said crank, so as to rotate the screw more easily when the sluitter-case is partially raised.
The red lines in Fig. 2 illustrate the point n to which the shutter-case can be lowered so as to be below the top of the frame a entirely, and a cover is to be put over the whole, as shown by the red line at t.
The sliding shuttereasc may be provided with friction-rollers at the. angles, as seen at 1l u, and a coiniterpoisc maybe provided to aid in raising the shutters and case.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'l`he stationary trame a, below the sidewalk or other surface, in combination with the slid' ing shutter-case and screw, substantially as and t'or the purposes` specitied.
In witness whereof' I have hereunto se my signature this 28th day ot' hl'arch, A. D. I
JAMES INGRAM.
