Description

a O/Q 2, H A z M JM, ff H v a @venan UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PELA'IIAH THOMPSON, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-CHURNS'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,030, dated March 2'2, 1864.
To aZZ whom it may con/cern.-
Beit known that I, PELA'IIAH THOMPSON, ot Springfield, in the county ot' Clark and Siate of Ohio, have invented a new and lmproved Mode of Constructing Barrel Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ret'- erence being had to accompanying drawings and to letters ot' reference marked thereon- Figure l being a side elevation of the cask, and Fig. 2 being a vertical crosssection of the same.
The nature ot' my invention consists in a method of keeping the cask tight at that portion where it is impossible to use a continuous hoop.
That others may understand the construction and operation ot' my invention, I will describe it particularly.
The cask A is constructed in the ordinary manner with staves, heads, and hoops.
In order to facilitate the removal of the dashers and the contents ot' the churn, and render it more easily cleansed, I make the openingB much larger than has hitherto been done-so long that the hoops C C are cut oft'.
In order to prevent the staves from springing apart at the bil ge, and thereby rendering the cask leaky, I provide the hoops C C (which are cut at the proper length) with a hook, D,
at each end. The cask being smaller in circumference at the point E than it is nearer the bilge, allows the hoop C to be put on and the hook D to be passed over the edge of the oritice B, when the hoop may be driven up7 in the ordinary manner and the bilge be made tight. I commonly place the coaining F around the orifice B for the purpose ot accommodating the cover G, and also to prevent the cream from splashing out. The dashers H are of any suitable form, and are coupled to the crank I in any desirable way. The oritice B is large enough t'o allow the dashers to be removed from the churn with ease, thereby facilitating the removal of the contents and the cleansing ofthe cask. v
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is
1. The hoop C, provided at each end with a hook, D, in combination with a cask having a large oritice inits side, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The coaming F, in combination with the hoop C and hook D, substantially as described.
PELATLIH THOMPSON.
