SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,468, dated. March 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER BALLOU, of North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Link Cuff-Buttons; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in devices by which two buttons are secured together and to the opposite ends of a cuff.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple device by which two buttons may be secured in the button-holes at opposite ends of a cuff and which can be operated to attach, or detach, the buttons by a simple movement and without breaking the cuff.

The invention consists in certain peculiar features of construction and combination of novel parts, which will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 represents an enlarged sectional view of the end portions of a cuff showing a pair of buttons secured to the cuff and attached to each other by my improved device. Fig. 2 represents a rear view of a pair of buttons linked together by the new device.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

In the drawings A and B represent the two opposite ends of a cuff having the usual button-holes. The button 5 is provided with an annular tail 6, and secured in this tail is the link 7, the wire forming which is crimped near one end at 88, the link 7 being thus secured to the tail 6 in such a manner that it is free to move pivotally but can not slide backward.- The button 9 is provided with a hook-shaped shank 10, the bent-tongue 11 of which extends slightly inward toward the back of the button 9 and is then turned outward to form a hole, which will now hold the button from turning,the hook-shaped shank 10 of the button 9 is now passed through the buttonhole in the end of the cuff marked A, in the position shown in the drawings, the free end of the link 7 may now be hooked over the outwardly-curved portion of the bent-portion 11 and drawn backward into the curve of the shank, the bent portion 11, extending toward the back of the button 9, serving as a jaw to prevent the end of the link 7 from slipping out. The button 9 may be readily detached from the link 7 by pushing the link forward, or by turning the button 9 over on its edge away from the button 5.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In link cuff-buttons, the combination with the button 5 having the tail 6, and the link 7 secured in said tail and having its sides bent inwardly as at 88, of the button 9 having the hook-shaped shank 10, the end of which is extended to form a jaw, adapted to engage the link 7, as described.
