WEAVER 8L SANDIFER.
. Clock Escapemnt. No. 49,323. Patented Aug. 8, 1865.

J5 O E x/wf mwwzssts 6w??? w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W. J. WEAVER AND J. M. SANDIFER, OF SOMERSET, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOCK-ESCAPEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,323, dated August 8, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, W. J. VEAVER and J. M. SANDIFER, of the county of Pulaski, in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clocks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and the letters representing the same.
The nature of our invention consists in dispensing with the old verge and as a substitute arranging the pendulum and pallets to the escapement-wheel so as to produce the same result more simply and with less friction; also, in a new mode of arranging movable pallets and of regulating the pendulum conveniently on beat, the whole being so constructed that a weight of five or six ounces answers instead of the old weight of five or six pounds.-
To enable others skilled in the artto make and use our invention, we will proceed to (l8' these devices form part, is hung to the stud g,
attached to the movable plate (3, by the spring 0, and its beat adjusted by the movable plate 0, operated by the set-screwy, and all secured totheirontplateoftheclock-movementE. The escapement-wheel is of the usual form, but owing to the change in the form of the pallets the cogs thereof are reversed. The remainder of the clock is in the usual form.
In attaching our improvements to old clocks the pieces (1 d may be fastened at the lower end by pivots and made movable at the upper ends, so as to accommodate themselves to escapement-wheels of various sizes.
The operation ofour improvements is so simple that it. will be seen by a glance at the drawing. The motion of the pendulum carries the pallets to and from the escapementwheel by side motions, and each pallet acts as an escaping-pallet, thereby overcoming the dead-point in the old verge plan and operating much more easily and smoothly.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of our improvements, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The exterior figure composed of the parts A A d d, with the adjustable pallets b 1), secured by the set-screws 0 0, as set forth, forming a part of the pendulum.
2. The combination of the said parts with the escapement-wheel B, in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. The adjustable pallets b 1), arranged and operating as described.
at. The movable plate 0, operated by the setscrewf, for the purpose of setting and keeping the pendulum exactly on beat, as set forth.
W. J. \VEAVER. J. M. SANDIFER.
