Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIANOS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,399, dated August l5, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY GUNrHER, ot'SaXe-/Veimar, Germany, now residing in the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Pianos; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in using a second vibrating-bridge placed along the piirblocl; and
connecting it with a second sounding-board situated in the bottom of the piano.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2is an elevation ofthe second vibrating-bridge and sounding-board, with the posts. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the line G H, Figfl.
By the present method ot' making pianos the vibra-ting strings rest upon the solid pinblock B, and upon the vibrating-bridge E of the ordinary sounding-board F, I introduce a second vibrating-bridge, A, placed along the pin-block B, and connect it by means of posts a ca with a second sounding-board,(l, situated in the bottom D ofthe piano, the strings d restingupon two vibrating-bridges-the vibratingbridge E attached to the ordinary soundingboa-rd F and my invented second vibratingbridge, A. The vibrating strings d communicate their vibration not only to the ordinary vibrating bridge E and its corresponding sounding-board F, but also to my second vibrating-bridge,A,anditscorresponding sounding-board C, strengthening the power and lengthening the duration ot' the tone.
Ido not confine myself to the use ot' the posts a a a for connecting the vibratingfbridge A with the second sounding-board, O, but allow myself to use any solid connect-ion.
I do notl claim the second sounding-board, knowing that it has been used before, but claim it as used in combination with the second vibrating-bridge.
' What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The second vibrating-bridge, A, as herein shown and described.
2. The combination ot' the vibrating-bridge A with the second sounding-board, G, as hereA in shown and described.
ANTHONY G UNTHER.
