BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,003, dated March 7, 1893.
Application filed September 21,1892. Serial No. 446,424. (No model.)
' clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in badges, and consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of parts comprising the badge, with reference to a cheap production of the same and a better means for securing the several parts together, and furthermore, in providing a means which prevents the silk or other like material embraced in a frame embodied in the badge, from becoming soiled.
Theinvention is especially designed to provide a badge of simple construction, and one in which the silk or other like material used, is covered with a transparent and flexible medium, thereby possessing great advantages over badges of the same class as now made.
The object of the invention is to provide a badge consisting of a metallic back-plate or back, provided with one or more pins, an open metallic frame provided with means for attaching or securing it to the back-plate, and,
preferably, a filling of silk, satin or other like material, bearing the inscription, emblem, design, &c., and a transparent medium between the frame and the backof the badge, whereby the inscription, emblem, 850., may be seen and read.
In the drawings herewith accompanying, in which similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved form of badge, and Fig. 2 is a back view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line y in Fig.2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section taken on line :20 in said Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a transparent piece used in connection with the badge embodying my invention. Fig. 6 is a front View of my improved badge, to which has been attached a silk ribbon or pendant provided with suitable designs or emblems.
Fig. 7 is a front or face View of a modified form of badge, embodying my invention, and Fig. 8 is a vertical cross section taken on line y in said Fig. 7.
As indicated in the above described views, A represents the improved badge, which is composed of a metallic back-plate a, of any suitable outline or configuration, being preferably formed with the raised portion a bounded by a flat rim a substantially as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. Upon said flat rim or of the back-plate a is arranged an open frame 17, being of a similar configuration in outline, as that of the back-plate, said frame being preferably raised on the top, as at b, and provided with a marginal rim b formed at right angles to the surface b, or approximately so, which rim ismade to surround the outer edge of the flat rim (1. of the back-plate a, as will be clearly seen from Fig. 2. Said rim b of the frame I) may be provided with any suitable means for securing it to the backplate, the preferred means being small tongues or lips b which are firmly bent down upon the flat rim 0. whereby the parts are secured together, but ordinary rivets or pins may be used, if desired.
Upon the raised portion a of I the backplate a and firmly clamped or held between v the frame b and the fiat rim a is a piece of silk, satin, paper, or other suitable material,
as 0, bearing the inscription, design or emblem, whereby, when the frame I) is securely Y fastened to the back-plate the material pre- 3 and 4. As will be evident from said figures, the central portion of the material 0 projects beyond the upper surface of, and through the surrounding frame b, and thereby becomes soiled very readily, when the badge is worn.
In order to avoid the soiling of the material c, and in order that it may at all times present a fine and smooth appearance, I have arranged on the top of the material 0 and firmly held in place by means of the frameb, a flexible and transparent medium d,such as celluloid, which is of the same configuration in outline as that of the frame I), as will be seen fromFig. 5. Owing to the fiexibilityof said transparent material d, it conforms readily to the curvature of the material a, and aside from its great service and usefulness in preventing the soiling of the silk or satin, or
the paper, when the latteris used, a badge is the result of a greatly enhanced appearance, the transparent medium at remaining at all times bright and untarnished. Instead or arranging this transparent material (Z between the frame I) and the back-plate in the manner just described, said frame 1) maybe provided with two or more cross bars I), as will be understood from Fig. 7, thereby constituting a badge provided with the openings or panels, substantially as shown. In this form of construction, the center panel may be provided with the transparent covering or material (I and theremaining panelsadjacentthereto can be left open, as will be clearly seen and understood from said Fig. 7 and from Fig. 8.
As will be seen more especically from Fig. 2, theback-plate a is provided with the usual fastening pin 6 for securing the badge to the coat or dress, and may also be provided with a second pin 6' on which is arranged a suitable ribbon or pendant f, bearing any desired inscription, design or emblem, as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A badge, comprising therein, an open frame, a suitable backing or back-plate secured in said open frame, said backing or backplate bearing an inscription, design or emblem, anda transparent medium arranged between said backing and the frame, and apin secured on said back-plate for attaching the badge to a garment, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A badge comprising therein, a metallic back-plate, an open frame secured to the face of said back-plate, a piece of silk, satin, paper, or other like material bearing an inscription, design, or emblem, arranged between said frame and the back-plate, and a piece of transparent material arranged to cover said silk, satin or paper, and a pin secured on said back-plate for attaching the badge to a garment, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A badge comprising therein, a metallic back-plate, an open frame provided with a rim 1) adapted to embrace the surrounding edge of the back-plate, means on said rim b for securing the frame to the back-plate, a piece of silk, satin, paper or other like material bearing an inscription, design or emblem arranged between said frame and the back-plate, and a piece of transparent material arranged to cover said silk, satin, or paper, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
frame and the back-plate, and a piece of transparent flexible material arranged to cover said silk, satin, or paper, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. A badge, comprising therein, an open frame, a suitable backing or back-plate, said backing or back-plate bearing an incription, design or emblem, and a transparent medium arranged between said backing and the frame, a pin secured on said backing or back-plate for attaching the badge to a garment, and a pin or bar 6 adapted to receive a ribbon or pendant, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The improved badge herein described, combining therein a ribbon or pendant having a suitableinscription, design or emblem thereon, and a badge-piece separable therefrom, comprising therein an open frame, a suitable backin g or back-plate secured in said open frame, said backing or back-plate being provided with an inscription, design 0r emblem, a transparent medium arranged between said backing and the frame, a pin or bar on said backing or back-plateadapted to receive said ribbon or pendant, and a pin or other device to admit the badge being secured to a garment, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. A badge comprising therein, a back-plate at having a flat rim a an open frame I) provided with a rim 12 adapted to embrace the surrounding edge of the back-plate, means on said rim b for securing said frame in position on said flat rim a a piece of silk, satin, paper or other like material, bearing an incription, design or emblem, arranged between said frame and the back-plate, a piece of transparent material arranged to cover said silk, satin or paper, and a pin secured on said back-plate for attaching the badge to a gar ment, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. A badge comprising therein, a back-plate a having a flat rim a an open frame b provided with a rim b adapted to embrace the surrounding edge of the back-plate, means on said rim (2 for securing said frame in position on said flat rim a a piece of silk, satin, paper or other like material, bearing an inscription, design or emblem, arranged between said frame and the back-plate, a piece of transparent material arranged to cover said silksatin or paper, a pin secured on said back-plate for attaching the badge to a garment, and a pin or bar a on said back-plate, adapted to receive a ribbon or pendant, all of said parts being arranged, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
