SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,197, dated February 25, 1896.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. WHITE- HEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My present invention relates to improvements in badges adapted to be worn on different occasions, and the primary object of the invention, therefore, is to provide a suitablyornamented ribbon-badge comprising therein a ribbon of the same or different colors on its opposite sides, or a pair of ribbons of different colors, wit-h an inscription, insignia, design or emblem on the opposite sides of the ribbon or ribbons, and a medallion, bearing an insignia, design or picture, attached to said ribbon or ribbons by means of a swivel connection, whereby the ribbon portion is directly reversible and the same badge can be worn on different occasions.

Another object of this invention is to provide, in connection with the above-described form of badge, the necessary means of attaching the badge to the clothing of the wearer and detaching and attaching the top bar and pin to the ribbon portion of the badge to arrange the particular portion or color of the badge on the outside upon any particular oc-' casion.

YVit-h these ends in view the invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of the ribbon portion of the badge with a medallion and a swivel connection for attaching said medallion to the lower portion of the ribbon portion of the badge.

The invention further consists in certain other novel arrangements and combinations of parts, such as will be hereinafter fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanylng sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of the badge embodying the features of my present invention,

and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is arear view of the badge; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the several parts of the badge, both of said views illustrating the reversible feature of the badge.

Similar letters of reference are employed in all the above-described views to indicate like parts.

In said drawings, A represents the improved badge, which comprises therein a ribbon a of the same or different colors on its opposite faces, or two ribbons a and a of different colors may be used, said ribbons being stitched together, as at (L2 and a and formed with the pin-receiving loops (0* and a respectively, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 2 and a. Said ribbon portion of the badge, which is made from any suitable material, as silk, satin, &c., is provided on its opposite faces with an insignia, design, inscription, &c., appropriate to the different occasions on which the badge is to be-worn.

The lower end of the ribbon portion of the badge is arranged in the opening or slot 1) of an ornamental bar I), which is provided with a hole or perforation Z1 Said bar Z) is suitably ornamented on both sides, so as to present a finished face on the reversal of the ribbon portion of the badge, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 3. In said hole or perforation b I have arranged a suitable ring 0, which is provided with a suitable collar or bearing portion 6 for a swivel-post d on the medallion d to be connected with the badge. Said post d is soldered or otherwise secured to the medallion (Z and has a suitable head (1 whereby it is rotatively retained in said bearing portion 0.

The medallion (Z bears an insignia, design, or other ornamentation on its face (1?, as shown in Fig. 1, but is perfectly plain on the back (1 as illustrated more particularly in Fig. 3. Thus it will be evident that the medallion can be turned on its swivel-post to correspond with either face of the ribbon portion of the badge when it is desired to use the same on different occasions, which is of great advantage, since it dispenses with ornamenting both faces of the medallion, and thereby greatly lessens the cost of manufacture, especially when the medallion is made from precious metals and is set with expensive ewels.

As indicated in the several figures of the drawings, at the upper part of the ribbon portion of the badge is an ornamental top bar, e, which is provided on the back with a pivoted or hinged bar or pin 6, adapted to be arranged in either of the loops a or a at the top of the ribbon portion of the badge, and has its free end sprung under a suitable hook or holding-clasp e whereby the ribbon portion of the badge is securely arranged in connection with said top bar, as will be understood. Said bar e is also provided with the usual form of spring-pin e and hook and holding-clasp for securing the badge to the coat or dress of the wearer.

From the above description it will be seen that 'l'have devised a novel form of ribbon badge provided with a pendant or medallion, said badge being adapted to be worn on different occasions-as, for instance, the one face of the ribbon portion of the badge may be a bright color, as blue, red, the, which is displayed on festive occasions, while the other face of the ribbon portion of the badge may be a black color or "may be white with black lettering thereon, which enables the same badge to be worn at funerals, while the me dallion, with the insignia of the association or order being attached to the ribbon'portion by means of a swivel connection, is'used in the ordinary manner.

Having thus described my inventiomwvhat I claim is- 1. A badge, com-prising therein a reversible ribbon portion, means at the top for attaching it to agarment, a medallion, and a swivel connection between the lower end of said ribbon portion and said medallion, sub stantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A badge, comprising therein a reversible ribbon portion, means at'the top for attaching it to a garment, an ornamental bar at the lower end of said ribbon portion, a medallion, anda swivel connection between said bar and said medallion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A badge,-comprising therein a reversible ribbon portion, means at the top for attaching it to a garment, an ornamental bar at the bottom of said ribbon portion, having a hole or perforation, a ring 0 therein provided with a collar 0, and a medallion d'having a swivel-post d rotatively arranged in said collar 0, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A badge, comprisingtherein a reversible ribbon portion, consistingof differentlycolored ribbons (t and a secured'together at the top and bottom, means at'the top for attaching it to a garment, a medallion, and a swivel connection between the lower end of said ribbon portion and said medallion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. A badge, comprising therein a reversible ribbon portion, consisting-of differently-colored ribbons a and a secured together at the top and bottom, means at the top for attaching it to a garment, an ornamental bar at the lower end of said ribbon portion, a medallion, and a swivel connection between said bar .and said medallion, substantially as and for .the purposes set forth.

6. A badge, comprising therein, a reversible ribbon portion, consisting of differently colored ribbons a and a secured together at the top and bottom, means at the top for at taching it to a'garment, an ornamental bar at the lower end of said ribbon portion having a hole or perforation, a ring 0 therein provided with a collar 0, and a medallion (Z having a swi-vehpost d rotatively arranged in saidcollar a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. The herein-describedreversible badge, comprising therein, differently-colored ribbons a and a, secured together at the top and bottom and provided with loops a and a, a badge-bar e having-a pin or bar e, an ornamental bar at the lower end of said colored ribbons, a'medallion, and a swivel connection between said bar and said medallion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

8. Theherein-described reversible badge,
