J. LEWIN.
SOFA BED.
No. 492,729. Patented Feb. 28, 189s. l
A TTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..l
JACOB LEWIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SOFA-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,729, dated February 28, 1893.
Application tiled August 1], 1892.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-`
Be it known that I, JACOB LEWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in bed lounges or sofa beds and the object of the invention is t0 obtain a device which can be readily and easily operated as set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device closed. Fig. 2, isa plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a plan view ot' the device opened or drawn out to form a bed. Fig. 4, is asection along a.' x Fig 2. Fig. 5, is a section along y y Fig. 1. Fig. 6, is a section along z z Fig. 3, showing the bottom of the fixed frame raised or elevated.
In the drawings the letter A indicates a stationary frame or base and B is a horizontal sliding frame to which a link or arm C is jointed or pivoted at D. Said Vlink C is jointed or pivoted at E to lever F fulcrumed at G at the lower part of the stationary frame A. The lever F has cords or connections I-I I extendingto a hand lever K fulcrumed at L on the back of the stationary frame A. When the lever K is swung in the direction of arrow l (Fig. l) the cord I is pulled or drawn to swing the lever F and link C to move or slide the frame B from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 so as to form a bed. i/Vhen the hand lever K is swung in the opposite direction the cord H is moved or pulled to swing the lever F and link C for moving the frame B back to the position shown in Fig. 1 to form a lounge. The stationary frame A has a rising and falling bottom M and when the frame B is out the bottom M is raised to a level with the cushion of frame B so as to form an even surface for the bed. To the bottom M and to the frame A are jointed or pivoted the swinging legs or supports N and Serial No. 442,742. (No model.)
by means of a loop or handle O the bottom can be raised and the legs N swung to the position shown in Fig. 6. When the bottom M is raised to the position shown in Fig. 6 the cord P is tightened to move or swing the movable head rest Q of bottom M to the position shown in Fig. 6 so as to be continuous with the headrest ot the lounge portion. The two head rests can then be used to support pillows. The head rest Q is jointed or hinged at R and has an arm or lever S to which is connected the cord P said cord being also connected to the fixed frame A. When the bed is to be closed into alounge the bottom M is pushed or moved to swing the legs or supports N from the position shown in Fig. 6 to the lowered position shown in Fig. 4 when the head rest Q can swing in or fold and the sliding frame B can be drawn back to the position shown in Fig. 1 to form a lounge.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a stationary frame and a sliding frame ot'a lever for actuating the sliding frame and a rising and falling bottom for thc stationary frame said rising and falling bottom being provided with a movable head rest and a cord connected to the sta-` tionary frame and to the movable head rest for automatically raisin g the latter as the bottom is elevated substantially as described.
2. The combination with a stationary frame provided with a rising and falling bottom of a sliding frame, a lever fulcrumed on the back of the stationary frame, a second lever fulcrumed at the lower part of the stationary frame, cords or connections extending from the first to the second lever and a link or connection for connecting the second lever tothe sliding frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence ot' two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB LEWIN. Witnesses:
WM. C. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
