UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OT'IE VAN OOSTRUM, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
WATE'RPROOF sun".
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,643, dated February 28, 1893. Application filed September 29, 1892. Serial No. 447,276. (No modell) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTE VAN OosTRUM, of
Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVaterproof Suits, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in a close fitting waterproof suit made of Mackintosh cloth, or
other suitable waterproof material, of novel construction, substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims, the same opening only at the top and extending from or about the neck to and :5 including the feet, or rather including a pair of rubber boots or shoes for the feet, connected with what forms the trousers portion of the continuous suit or garment.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying 2o drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of an individual attired in a waterproof suit embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation or diagram upon the line 22 in Fig. 1, illustrating the application of the rubber boot or shoe to the pants portion of the suit; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, partly sectional,
view or diagram of one of the sleeve portions ofthe suit, in part.
A, indicates the waterproof or Mackintosh garment fitting the figure of a man, the same extending from the neck or shoulders down 3 5 to the feet, and virtually forming one integral 7 piece or waterproof garment shaped to form 3 -a vest or body portion, which is provided with sleeves. This portion A has ornamental The trousers ff 4,0 are attached to the part A, in such a manner as to form a water-excluding seam, so that the two A, f are practically integral. The
body portion A has an opening for entry of the body at its top, said opening part being 5 provided with an under flap 1) on either side of its front, one of which only is here shown, and outer flaps c, c, all adapted when closed to button or fasten, and the flaps c, c, to button or fasten over the shoulders in front to WVater is excluded from entering up within the sleeves d, d, and feet or leg portions f, f,
of the garment, the only exposed parts, as follows:-Each sleeve (1 is contracted and has an india rubber or elastic band e applied to or worked in about and around the wrist, which prevents water from entering up the sleeve; while each leg portion f has closely sealed or cemented to it, as at i, the upper leg portion 9 of an india-rubber boot or shoe B for the foot, that is one for each foot, and each leg portion of the trousers has attached to it a strap h which passes under the boot or shoe to hold the trousers down and to relieve the waterproof junction of the boot or shoe with the trousers from strain or breaking loose; the whole forming a perfect waterproof suit adapted to leave the limbs of the person wearing it a perfect freedom of action. In some cases, as for instance in the case of a miner working in a wet or dripping mine, a waterproof cap with attached pendent hood, not shown here, may also be worn, to give protection to the head and neck, and to prevent water passing down between the suit and the body at the neck, thus, in connection with the suit or garment here shown, keeping the wearer perfectly dry.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a waterproof suit, the trousers ff, the boots B B whose legs are covered by the trousers and hermetically attached thereto, and straps secured to the trousers and passing under the boots, as shown and described.
2. The water-proof suit, composed of the coat or body garment A, having the opening at the top and fastening flaps b c for closing the same, the sleeves at having elastic bands at the wrists, the trouser portion f f, and boots B B, hermetically attached to thetrousers, all as shown and described.
