To all whom t may concern..-

Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS C. BARLER, of Fremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking Outfits; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in shoe blacking outtits,-the object being to produce such a device, which shall be simple in construction, compact, of tasty design, durable and effective in the performance of its functions.

A further object is to produce a shoe blacking outfit which can-be folded upout of the way so that the blacking dto. will be kept free from dust dac., and which shall vbe comparatively cheap to manufacture.

With these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claimsro In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a sectional view of the device, open. A represents an arm or box adapted to be secured to the Wall or casing of a room, the lower ends of the sides of said arm or box being made with enlargements a. In casting the arm A, the enlargements a are set inwardly the thickness of the enlargements b of the arm B, so that said enlargements b will be disposed in line with the sides4 of the arm A, as shown in Fig. 3. Near its outer end, the bottom of the arm or box B is preferably curved slightly upwardly as at d2, and provided with three or more lugs d', cl3, between which a blacking box C can be placed, said blacking box being properly held in position by means of a screw e passing through the lng d. The lug d also forms a partition between the body of the arm B and the portion which contains the blacking box, whereby a compartment f is produced for the reception of brushes. Beyond the portion of the arm B on which the blacking box rests,

said arm is extended slightly upwardly and then horizontally and terminates in a foot rest D.

Instead of making the foot rest D integral with the arm B, as shown in Figs. l and 2, it may be hinged thereto as shown in Fig. 4, and adapted to fold over the box of blacking C and thus exclude dust therefrom.

Then the device is open and ready for use, the foot rest D will bear ata point in proximity to its pivot, on the upwardly projecting portion d4 at the end of the arm B.

Projecting from the back of the arm or box A,is a receptacle g for the reception of a bottle 72. containing shoe polish, the bottom g of this receptacle being preferably cast with the arm B. With the device thus constructed, a firm foot rest will be provided for the foot during the operation of blacking the shoes;

provision is made for holding the several artiperformance of its functions and ornamental in appearance.

The device will preferably be made of lcast metal, and will therefore be very rigid.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A blacking outfit comprising two parts hinged together, each part having a receptacle formed therein, one having a shoulder therein adapted to form an abutment for the pivoted end of the other end to strike when the device is open whereby a secure support is formed therefor, and the extreme free end forming a foot rest adapted to fall approximately into alignment with the back of the device when the parts are closed, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a stationary section comprising back and sides, and hinged section comprising front and sides, the edges of the sides of the two sections adapted to come together when the device is closed, the front of the hinged section curved inward at its lower end, and the other section having a shoulder which this curved end is adapted to strike when the device is opened, and a foot rest formed on the free end of the hinged seetion, substantially as set forth.

3. A blacking outfit comprising tWo members hinged together, one having two receptacles therein, one receptacle adapted to receive brushes and the other adapted to receive a blaokin g box, the latter receptacle having an adjustable device for removably securing the box in place, substantially as set forth.

4. A blacking outfit comprising two members hinged together, one member stationary and the other member having a receptacle formed therein adapted to receive blaoking, brushes, this member also provided with a tread sufficiently raised from the receptacle so that a foot resting thereon will be above the articles contained in the receptacle substantially as set forth.
