Description

UNITED STATES PATEN FRANZ LEHMANN, OF C( PENIOK, GERMANY.
METHOD OF'PRODUCING LEAF-METAL PATTERNS ON WOVEN FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,364, dated February 7, 1893.
Application filed August 80, 1892. Serial No. M4556. (No specimens.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ LEHMANN, a suly ject of the King of Prussia, German Einperor, and a resident of Copenick, in the Provinoe of Brandenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improved Method of Producing Leaf-Metal Patterns on Woven Fabrics, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of leaf-metal ornaments on textile fabrics, and consists in applying a foil of leaf-metal on one side of the fabric, and pressing a stamp of suitable form upon the fabric from the other side, said stamp being danbed with an appropriate glue.
My invention is performed as follows: On a table being at least the size of the piece of fabric to be operated upon I spread a foil of leaf-metal, for instance leaf-gold or leaf'silver. This foil may be composed of several smaller ones. On this foil I spread the fabric to be impressed therewith, and then an embossed stamp smeared with an adhesive substance is forced on the back (wrong) side of the fabric. Thereby the adhesive substance (glue) will be driven through the fabric at the places where the same is in contact with the stamp, and the leaf-metal will adhere to the right side of the fabric according to the pattern of the stamp.
The principal advantage of my improved method is its expeditiousness and. the-neat appearance of the produced patterns. This is a consequence of the glue being applied on the wrong side, so that the right side cannot he soiled.
A further advantage is that the pattern is not pressed in, as usual, but forced out so that the right side is somewhat embossed. Finally the leaf-metal willadhere very firmly to the fabric, as the stamp may be forced on the same with a very heavy pressure, the outlines of the pattern remaining sharp nevertheless. The glue, being free to pass through the fabric, will not be squeezed out laterally.
My improved method may be employed to produce patterns of any metal (in the form of foils) on textile fabrics, and I do not confine myself to the use of leaf-gold and leafsilver. The kind of textile fabric is immaterial as long as it permits of the glue being pressed through.
My improved method will, on account of its expeditiousness and cheapness, be especially convenient in the case of emergency, when fabrics ornamented with gold or silver patterns have to be made at short notice.
Whatl claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:-
The method of producing leaf-metal ornaments on textile fabrics, consisting in applying a foil of leaf-metal on the right side of the fabric, and pressing the wrong side of the same by means of an embossed stamp daubed with an adhesive matter, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANZ LEHMANN.
