WIT/V588 UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICEQ WILLIAM SOHUMAOHER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ORN'AMENTAL WOODSTRIP OR PANEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,422, dated October 8, 1889. Application filed November 6, 1888- Serial at. 289,988- (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SOHUMAOHER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental \Vood Strips or Panels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a strip of wood ornamented in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of the same on line a: so of Fig. 1.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in theclaim.
A represents a strip of wood ornamented upon its upper surface partly with paper, as at a a, and partly by the surface 0 c of the wood not covered by paper, but having an outline of any desired form or shape. The surface 0 c in this instance of the exposed wood is of less area than the surface of paper 5 but this relation may be reversed, if desired.
In ornamenting the strip of wood the paper surfacing is both in relief andintaglio; but at no point is it much, if any, higher than the surface 0 c, and the entire surface of the paper is by preference embossed The paper and the whole surface of the strip is stamped in a die, which cuts the paper, and at the same time embeds the edges of the paper, as at e e, below'the surface of 3 5 the strip of wood, while the main surface thereof is rounded or otherwise ornamented in relief, the edges being pressed below the main surface of the paper and below the adjacent surfaces of the wood, forming offsets 40 or shoulders 11 i, which protect the edges of the paper. The paper before being placed in the die is coated upon its lower surface with glue, sizing, or other adhesive material, so
that the pressure causes it to adhere firmly 5 to the wood.
I do not confine myself to the use of ornamental paper, as in some cases I can use silk, plush, or other fabric with good effect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, wood strips or panels having ornamental paper pressed into the surface thereof, the edges 6 e of the paper being pressed below the surface of the wood, and the main or entire surface of the paper between the depressed edges being raised and embossed, substantially as described.
WILLIAM SOHUMAOHER.
