METHOD OF CQNSTRUCTING ART-PANELS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,651, dated December 30, 1890. Application filed June 15, 1889. Serial No. 314,495. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. GALINDO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Art-Panels and Card-Board Decorations, of which the following is a specification.
This invention particularly relates to forming the ornamental plastic or other edges of paper art-panels or card-board decorations by means of any suitable device that will automatically force the edge of the cardboard upward in the shape of a fluted or corrugated rib and at the same time fashion the plastic material upon the upper surface of the edges of the card-board in any ornamental configuration for decorative purposes, also for strengthening and stiffening the board, and thus I preventing its twisting or warping, out of shape, and it diminishes the amount of shrinkage.
To enable those who are skilled in the art to construct and operate my invention, I will describe it, as follows, to wit:
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a top and vertical sectional view (crosswise the same) of a small show-card at having my improvement thereon, as shown at I), also showing the plastic ornamental edge 0. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the formingrolls (1 and e in position to operate upon the edge of the card-board a, shown at b, whilein the act of passing through the rolls d and e. The upper roller (1 operates upon the plastic mass 0, Fig. 1, and presses it into shape when operating conjointly with the smooth drivingwheel 6 on the under side of the card-board a. This wheel 6 is formed with a smooth rounded edge to form the raised fluted rib in the edge of the card-board, also the plastic coating while it is being fashioned into shape by the upper concave die or ornamented roller (1.
The smooth under roller (2 performs a triple duty or function: First, it acts as a feeder of the board a through the rolls; secondly, it forms the fluted rib b, and lastly, it supports and holds the card-board or panelin position while the plastic material is being formed into shape by the upper roller or die, whether ornamented or plain.
"I am aware that embossed edges of artists panels and card-boards are in common use. These I do not claim, as my invention is confined to ornamental plastic edges of art-panels or card-boards,with fluted edges to strengthen and counteract the warpage or twisting of the card-board or panel, and pressing the plastic material into shape by one simultaneous operation, which produces the fluted or corrugated rib, as above set fort-h.
After having set forth the several parts of my invention I would here state that the Patents No. 154,581, 230,250, and 308.586 form no part of this application forLetters Patent, and are therefore disclaimed.
What I claim as new and useful in cardboards or art-panels is- The method of ornamenting the edges of art-panels, &c., which consists in providing the edges with a plastic composition and then passing'the same between two rollers, the upper onebeing provided with a concave groove suitably ornamented and the lower one with a smooth convex edge which runs in line with the concave groove in the upper roller, whereby the edges are raised and ornamented by one operation, substantially as described.
