WILLIAM P. WOLFINGTON, or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
Letters Patent No. 100,579, dated March 8, 1870.
IMPROVED METHOD OFLAYIIN'G DPT PATTERNS FOR STITC HING ON LEATHER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. WoLnmo'roN, o the city of Louisville, county of Jefferson, State of Kentucky, have invented a new and superior Method of Layin g Ofl Lines and Figures for Scroll-Stitching on Leather, 8:0. X
My invention consists in laying off. any desired pattern upon sheet metal, or zinc, for instance, by means of punctures through the metal with a sharp-pointed instrument. I
These punctures are close together, and show all the lines of the desired pattern, and aseach puncture produces a sharp protuberance of metal on the other side ,of the metal, we have on .that side the pattern formed of lines of sharp-metal protuherances.
By bringing that side in contact with leather, a little pressure and, friction cause each protuberance to make an impression upon the leather, andhenoe give an exact copy of the pattern.
, Any nu-mber of impressions can be taken from the same metal pattern, requiring only the time necessary to bring themtogethe'r, and do a half mioutes rubbing,
while by the old plan the workman had to draw, the pattern upon each article by impression with a tool called a tickler, by pressing upon the tool and racing 01f each-separate line; hence the merit of my invention consists in its enabling a workman to do in two or three minutes as much laying ofi for stitching as he could do the usual process in one hour.
The accompanying drawings are made by puncturing instead of penciling, thus more practically illustratingthe metal pat-tern and the method-of making byLetters Patent, is- As an article of manufacture, a metalplate, with sharp protuberances in design, for impressing such design upon leather, &c., for stitching seam-1i hes, notemarks, &c., substantially as set forth.
