CLAMP-FILE AND MANUFACTURE OF SAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,011, dated January 31, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER DOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Healthy, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamp-Files and Manufacture of Same, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention has for its object an improvement in the clamp-file set forth in Letters Patent No. 409,142, granted me on August 13, 1889, my present improvement consisting in the base or support on which the clamp and its pressure spring are mounted, as will more fully hereinafter appear.

In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1, is a plan view of a base for the clamp, illustrating the outline configuration of said base before being stamped up into proper shape, and Fig. 2, is a perspective view of said base, complete, readyfor attachment with the clamp and tablet. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the file complete, said view being taken from the rear of the clamp.

The file, as a whole, consists of a tablet A, base B attached thereto, said base having the ears I) cut and struck-up therefrom, which latter serve as journals for the shaft 0, on which the clamp D and its pressure spring, E, are mounted, as shown in Fig. 3. This base is also provided with a central ear or lug b cut and struck-up therefrom, to which the central looped portion e of the spring is attached. It will be seen that the shaft passes through the coiled portions of the spring, through the ears I) and also throughv the downwardly projecting portions 61 of the clamp,- the free end portions 6 of the spring impinging against the lower rear portion of said clamp adjacent to its side portions, cl, as shown. The function of the spring is to ap ply pressure against the lower rear portion of the clamp, and by this means cause the forward edge d of the clamp to press downward upon the letters or other papers placed between itand the tablet. This function of the spring and clamp is the same as that produced in my aforesaid Letters Patent, and is not made a feature herein.

My invention consists in forming the base B from sheet-metal, the projecting ears I) b, and b all being cut and struck-up from the body thereof, as shown. In the manufacture of this base, I employ a suitable die, (not shown) to cut out the blank form, as shown in Fig. 1, after which said blank is made to pass between suitable dies which cut out and force up the ears 1), b, and b the opening 12 in the ears 1) being formed, (preferably) in the first operation. It is also preferred to turn up the front edge of the base to form a flange b and end projections, (9 as shown, against which the end of the paper to be filed is placed. This flange and guide projections are all formed by the dies which form the struck-up ears I) and b and at the same operation.

The base may be constructed, in the manner aforestated, from any suitable sheetmetal; and, the product thus attained is far superior to a cast base, as the projecting ears will not break in handling. The base thus stamped from sheet-metal is much lighter in Weight than the same could possibly be if cast, and is much more quickly and economically produced.

. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination of tablet- A, base B attached to said tablet and clamp D, said base having the ears (7, b and b cut and struck-up therefrom, the clamp having depending side ears d which latter are pivoted to the ears I) by means of a shaft 0, the latter having thereon a coiled springE the end portions of which impinge against the rear lower face of the clamp, said spring having a central looped portion e engaging with the ear b on the base, substantially as set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a base for a clamp-file constructed substantially as herein set forth, said base consisting of sheet metal and having the ears I) b and central ear 11 cut and struck-up therefrom to form bearings for the clamp and a catch for the looped portion of the clamp-spring, as set forth.

3. The base B formed from sheet-metal and having the ears b b and 5 cut and struck-up therefrom, the front of said base having an upturned flange b, in combination with tablet A, clamp D, shaft 0 and spring E, said clamp having depending ears (1 pivotally connected to the ears 1) by means of said shaft, 10

around which latter said spring is coiled, the free ends of said spring impinging against said clamp, the central looped portion of the spring-engaging with ear 19 as set forth.
