G. C. .MAGARGAL- PORTABLE BOOK A1511)v PACKAGE CASE.
Patented Jan. 17, 1893 2r/fesses:
Unirse Strains i PATENT @erica u GEORGE C. MAGARGAL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE BOOK AND PACKAGE CASE.
SlEGIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,122, dated January 17, 1893.
Application tiled June 9, 1892. Serial No. 436,089. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.- y
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. MAGARGAL, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pen nsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portable Book and Package Gases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention has relation to portable cases, and consists in a novel construction of portable book and package case having a main rectangular receptacle of rigid walls adapted to be suspended upon the person by a strap, or otherwise; upon the front or outer Wall of which receptacle is provided an automatically closing pocket the sides of which are composed preferably ot exible material secured to the front Wall of the rectangular case, two plate springs being provided to said front Wall ot the case at one of their ends and secured to the front Wall of the pocket at their other end, said springs tending to normally close the pocket but at the same time to allow of its being distcnded when papers or packages are introduced therein.
The object of my invention is to provide a neat and compact portable book and package case to contain principally books of reference or explanation and packages of papers or policies, especially adapted to the use ot insurance and commercial men and agents generall Iyam aware that portable cases for the accommodation of books and papers are not new and do not broadly claim the same; my invention residing in the compact portable rectangular case having rigid Walls with automatically closing pocket operated by plate springs provided upon the `front Wall of the case, as herein described.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line :za-r1.- of Fig. l.
A represents the main rectangular case having the rigid Walls, a, a', a2, a?, a4; provided upon the front Wall, a, are the flexible or hinged strips, b, b', secured thereto by sewing, pasting or otherwise; the strips, b, b', at their outer edges are secured by any suitable means rigidly to the front adjustable Walh,
which is preferably constructed of rigid or semi-flexible material. A flexible or hinged strip, b2, is also provided to the bottom of the adjustable Wall, B, by its outer edges, the other edge being secured to the rigid Wall, a; the endsof the strip, b2, are preferably united with the strips, b, b', respectively; two plate springs, s,- s, are rigidly secured at one of their ends, preferably the lower end, to the rigid wall, a, and at their other or upper ends to the rear of the wall, B, vertically in the position shown in the drawings; the springs are so constructed as to tend normally inward against the face of the wall, a, and yet at the same time to allow the adjustable Wall, B, to be forced out, as when a package oi paper is introduced, to the full extent of the width of the strips, h, b. Eyes, e, are preferably secured to the rear Wall, ai, at its upper end at each side to allow of the attachment of a strap, d. The strap, d, is preferably short of a total length of about ten inches. The case is preferably supported by means of a hook or hooks, g, g', adapted to be engaged in the sleeve opening of the coat and upper pocket or sleeve openin g of the vest, or either. The hooks, g, g are secured preferably by a swivel ring, h, to the strap, d, through which it passes. The hook, t', is designed to be engaged in the sleeve opening of the coat, and is constructed of a iiexible metal stri p shaped so as to best conform to the movement of the sleeve; the hook, g, is similarly constructed of a more decided hook-shape adapted to be engaged in the upper vest pocket or in the arm hole cf the vest. The case is preferably carried at one side beneath the coat and suspended as described.
The cases are constructed With a leather finish of various sizes adapted to hold neatly and compactly any size of book and paper package, such as insurance policies, dac. desired to be carried.
Having thus described my invention what Iclaim and desire tc secure by Letters Patent is:-
l. A portable book and package case consisting of the rectangularly disposed Walls, a, a', a2, a3, a4, flexible or hinged strips, b, bf, b2, provided at their inner edges rigidly upon the outer face of the Wall, a, and secured by their outer edges to the adjustable Wall, B plate springs, s, s', provided rigidly at one end to the Wall, a., and secured at their other end to the adjustable Wall,B, said springs having their tension normally toward the face of the wall, a, and means for suspending and carrying the case substantially as described.
2. A portable book and package case Consisting of the reetangularly disposed Walls, c1., a', a2, 0,3, a4, flexible or hinged strips, l), h', b2, provided at their inner edges rigidly upon the outer face of the Wall, a, and secured at their outer edges to the adjustable wall, B; plate springs, s, s', provided rigidly at one end to the wall, a, and secured at their other end to the adjustable Wall, B, said springs having their tension normally toward the face of the wall, ct, strap, d, secured to the case and suspending hook provided upon said strap, substantially as described.
3. A portable book and package ease consisting of the reotangularly disposed Walls, d, d', a2, a3, a4, flexible or hinged strips, b, b,h2, provided at their inner edges rigidly upon the outer face of the Wall, a, and secured by their outer edges to the adjustable Wall, B; plate Springs, s, s', provided rigidly at one end to the Wall, a, and secured at their other end to the adjustable Wall, B, said springs having their tension normally toward the face of the wall, es, strap, d, secured to the case and hooks, g, g', provided to said strap, d, through the medium of the swivel ring, h, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto setmy hand this 3d day of June, A. D. 1892.
GEORGE C. MAGARGAL.
