HASP-LOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,326, dated January 3, 1893. Application filed April 12, 1892. Serial No. 428,823 (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OORTEZ V. PUGH, of the city of Bowling Green, Pike county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Hasp-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

Myinvention relates toimprovements in an adjustable hasp lock and consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and designated in the claim.

In the drawings:-Figure 1, is perspective View of my complete invention as applied to a door with a part thereof broken away. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of the door and the jamb thereof, showing my invention applied to the same. Fig. 3, is a cross-section of my invention as applied to the door as in Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings: 3, indicates a sliding hasp made of any suitable material and provided with two elongated slots 4 traveling in a staple 5, driven in the door 1,

6, indicates a knob or button, which is mounted on and carried by a sliding hasp 3.

I Said knob or button 6 is mounted so as to be revoluble and is provided with a flange 8, and said flange 8 is provided with an inclined surface 9.

10, indicates a recess, which is formed in said flange 8 for the purpose more fully hereinafter described.

The catch 7 is provided with a screw threaded stem 11, which is adapted to be screwed into the door jamb 2. Said catch 7 is provided with a shoulder 12 under and against which said flange 8 rests when the door 1 is fastened.

The hasp 3 is adjustable or sliding for the purpose more fully hereinafter described and is secured and fastened to a door 1 by means of a staple 5, or a similar device.

,Having fully described the mechanical parts of my invention, I will now describe the operation of the same. I will first describe the manner of fastening the door. After closing it the hasp 3 is slipped over the catch 7 and the knob or button 6 attached to the hasp 3 is pushed under the catch by means of the recess 10 to allow the turning of said knob or button 6 until it is tightened under the shoulder of the catch 7 by means of the inclined flange 9. In unfastening the door, the knob or button 6 is turned from its position to the recess 10 to allow the lifting of the hasp 3 oi the catch 7 by means of the said knob or button 6. The motion of the hasp 3 by means of the slots 4 gives the hasp free motion through the staple 5 to allow for any shrinkage or settling of said door. The hole 13 in the catch 7 can be used to insert a padlock or other means of more safely securing the door. The hole 14 in the staple 3 is provided as a means of making the hasp stationary to the'door if desirable. It will be readily noticed that the object of the inclined upper face 9, of the knob or button 6 by being turned under the shoulder 12 is to provide a sure and safe means of securing the look. It is necessary in unfastening the door to turn the knob or button 6 until the recess 10 allows the same to be lifted off the catch 7. This is an additional safe-guard against the accidental unlocking of the door. This invention is especially applicable to barns, cowsheds, pastures and all places used to confine animals as the danger of accidental unlocking of doors and gates is absolutely obviated.

The combination, with a hasp, and a catch, of a rotatable button mounted upon the outer face of the hasp and provided with a flange, having a recess at one side, and its outer or upper face reversely inclined from a point diametrically opposite the recess to the latter, whereby said flange is wedged between the hasp and catch when the button is operated; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
