BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,034, dated January 3, 1893. Application filed October 9, 1891. Serial No. 408,234. (No specimens.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES EDWIN PROVINE, of Ridgewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates more particularly to hat brushes, and has for its object to so improve brushes of this character as to provide a compact and efficient construction, suitable for being conveniently carried in ones pocket, or in a small valise or satchel.

To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter particularly described and defined in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush constructed in accordance with my invention, the brush being shown in the open position, ready for use; Fig. 2 is a side view, partly broken away and in section, the members of the brush being in the closed or folded position; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View of the brush in open position, the plush brush being projected for use; and Fig. 4 is a like view, the bristle section or member being projected for use.

In constructing a brush embodying my invention, I provide two members or sections A, B, of which in the present instance the brush section A is provided with bristles,while the section B is formed with a plush brushing surface, the latter being specially designed for use on silk hats. The back 0 of each brush is preferably longitudinally grooved as at c, and said backs are continued or projected at each end and forked, as shown at c Fig. 2. Each brush is loosely fitted in a case D, said cases being alike and of a suitable size and material so that when brought into the closed position, that is, disposed in line with each other, their open ends together, as in Fig. 2, the brush may be conveniently carried in ones pocket. The two sections of the brush are united at each end by a suitable elastic connection E, that will permit them to be disposed in line, in the closed position, as in Fig.

2, or opened for use, as in the remaining figures. I preferably employ a coiled spring for this purpose, and form the same in a continuous piece, which passes from one brush or member to the other, and around in the rear of the brush backs, to lie in the grooves c, and pass through the forked ends 0, thereof, as will best be understood from Fig. 2.

At the outer or open sides of the cases D, the same are provided with suitable guides, through which the spring E passes, said guide preferably being formed of apiece of leather d, having an eye or eyelet d, and having a tongue or projection (1 which is let into the case D, and suitably stitched in place. The guide eyes are further strengthened by a metallic plate (1 The guides thus formed extend over or into the open ends or sides of the cases D, and thus serve to arrest the outward movement of the brushes in response to the springs E, as the projecting ends 0 will contact with said guides, as will be readily understood.

A guard F, is provided for covering one brush section while the other is being used. Such guard consists of a strip of leather or other flexible material, and it is secured by stitching along its longitudinal edges, to the inner surface of one side of each section or case D, as will best be understood from Figs. 3 and 4. With this construction it will be seen that either brush section may be used, and that when not required for use the closed brush may be conveniently carried in ones pocket.

In Fig. 3, I have indicated by dotted lines, the height that the plush surface may be in practice.

A staple or like fastening G prevents creeping or displacement of the spring E.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a brush having an inclosing case held thereto, the brush being movable in the caseto project it therefrom for use, and the case having internal stops at its open end for limiting the outward movement of the brush, by contacting with the brush back substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a brush consisting of a case, a brush fitted in said case,

and a continuous spring extending around the back of the brush and at its ends, substantiallyas described.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a brush comprising two cases brush members or sections therein, the cases having an elastic hinge connection, uniting adjacent sides substantially as described.

As a new article of manufacture, a brush comprising two sections, each having a case in which the brushes are held to slide, for projecting said brushes or inclosing them as desired, the said sections being movable into a position in line with each other, face to face, or to an open or unfolded position, and springs extending around both of said brushes and forming a yielding connection between the brushes, substantially as described.

5. The combination with a brush comprising two folding cases, and a brush held to "slide in each case, the. cases being held togethelgand provided with stops for limiting the outward movement of the brushes, substantially as described.

6. The combination with a brush formed in two sections, of a case for each section and an elastic connecting device, for said cases, the latter being formed with guides for said connecting devices, substantially as described.

7. The combination with a brush formed of two sections, of a coil spring forming an elastic connection for said sections, substantially as described.
