- the object of my invention is to produce a protector for cotton gins, arranged so as to cover the exposed parts of the saws of the gin and prevent injury to an operator; and it is so constructed and arranged as not to interfere in any manner with the operation of any ordinary gin, or to prevent access to the saws for any purpose, as for cleaning or repairing them. SAW COTTON-GIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,921, dated December 27, 1892.

T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM S. DUKES, of Branchville, county of Oran geburg, and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw Cotton-- Gins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce a protector for cotton gins, arranged so as to cover the exposed parts of the saws of the gin and prevent injury to an operator; and it is so constructed and arranged as not to interfere in any manner with the operation of any ordinary gin, or to prevent access to the saws for any purpose, as for cleaning or repairing them. It is also so constructed as to prevent the tendency of the accumulation of dirt upon or in proximity to the saws.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gin with my protector attached to the bottom of the breast, the breast being in the lower position; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the breast elevated; Fig. 3 is acentral vertical section of the subject-matter of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view of the protector detached; Fig. 5 is a view of the protector-carriers upon the breast with the protector removed.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates a gin of any suitable and ordinary construction; 2 indicates a breast hinged thereto at 3, as usual; and at indicates the saws of the gin.
5 indicates my protector, which consists preferably of a back 6 and inwardly projecting fingers or ribs '7. The back may be made of any suitable material, as for example wood. The fingers are preferably made of metal set into and fastened in the back in any suitable manner. The protector is set so that each of the spaces between the fingers is occupied by one of the saws, and the fingers are a little below the edges of the saws so as to prevent access to them from below where ordinarily they are dangerously exposed. The protector is preferably carried on the bottom of the breast, because it is thought to be more readily and conveniently managed in that position than in any other.
In addition to the ordinary movement of the breast, I prefer to make the protector readily removable from the breast itself, and for that purpose provide suitable carriers upon the bottom of the breast.
Referring to the drawings, 8 indicates oppositelyprojecting brackets fastened preferably by screws to the ends of the breast.
9 indicates flanges on the inner edges of the brackets, which engage with recesses 10 in the back of the protector, and serve to hold it firm.
11 indicates openings in the brackets, with 'which bolts 12 in the ends of the back may engage to hold the protector securely in position.
13 indicates a brace or middle support adapted to partially sustain the weight of the protector and to relieve the brackets some- I What.
I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but reverse to myself the right to vary them to the fullest extent within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is:
In a cotton gin, the combination with the breast having a central brace, and the flanged brackets with openings therein secured to the ends of said breast, of a protector having a back with recessed ends, said protector having its recessed ends engaging the brackets and resting at its central portion on the brace, and the bolts engaging the openings in the brackets to firmly hold the protector in place with its fingers arranged below the edges of the saws, substantially as specified.
