SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,896, dated December 27, 1892.

Application filed March 28, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN W. LOWMAN, residing at Vicksburg, Warren county, in the State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pile-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in piling and the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as will be presently described and claimed.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a view of a section of a pile provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 shows one of the guards or faciugs made circular in shape and formed of woven Wire.

A common difficulty experienced in pile driving is the splitting and brooming of the pile which in addition to injuring the pile forms in some instances a cushion for the blow of the driver and decreases the force thereof in driving the pile. lhis reticulated frame A by its bars or portions centering the pile serves to prevent the splitting or broomingof'the pile as will be readily understood. At the same time by forcibly incorporating the guard or facing with the pile the fibers of the latter operate to retain the facing in place. The facing is preferably of woven Wire the wire being heavy and woven as shown in Figs.

In practice the force exerted to incorporate the facing with the piles operating on the points of crossingof the wire acts to force the portions of wire between said crossings down into the pile increasing the protecting effect of the facing and reducing the amount of the facing exposed to the blow of the driver. WVhen the facing or guard is applied to the pile, the first blow of the hammer drives it to place and to position to effectually prevent the slipping 0f the pile. Manifestly the cost of the guard or facing will be but slight and its use will be an important element in reducing the cost of piling.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent 1s The improved pile provided with a reticu-. lated facing or guard of Woven Wire incorporated with its impact face whereby the fibers of the pile operate to retain the facing in place and the latter in turn operates to prevent the splitting of the head of the section substantially as set forth.
