o. 488,889. Patented D80, 27, 1892,
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEANDER K. ROYER, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
PRESERVlNG-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,839, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed August 29, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER K. ROYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson,in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Preserving-Cans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side View of the can. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same and Fig.3 is a detail in perspective of the spring key.
The invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in fruit jars, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter specified.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the jar of ordinary cylindric form, terminating at its upper end in an enlarged neck portion B, which forms an interior olfset or shoulder a, and an exterior shoulder 19. Supported on the oifset or shoulder a is an inner cover or lid 0, which is preferably of glass, having its upper marginal edge beveled off obliquely, as indicated at c, to seat a packing ring, or rubber band D. Said lid is also preferably slightly of concavo-convex form.
Serial No. 4%,409. (No model.)
detachably into a loop f in the wire G. Said bail at its central portion is depressed as shown at g, and attached to this portion is a spring key H. The jar is filled in the ordinary mauner, and the lids and packing ring put in place. The bail is then carried over the top of the jar, which is notched at h, h, to
receive it, and its free end hooked into thewire g. The key H is then turned under the depressed portion 9 of the bail in such a manner as to take a firm bearing on the upper lid, and securely lock it in place. To unseat the cover, the key is withdrawn and the bail unhooked.
Having described this invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
The herein described fruit jar, having an enlarged upper neck portion B, forming the interior ofiset or should er a, some distance below the mouth of the jar, an inner concaveconvex cover or lid O seating on said interior shoulder, the outer cover E fitting over said inner cover, the packing ring between said covers, the exterior wire extending around underneath said exterior shoulder 17, the bail secured at one end to said wire and having a depressed central portion, said bail being arranged to extend transversely over the mouth of the jar and to detachably engage said wire, and a spring key swung on said bail, and adapted to be turned down within the mouth of said jar into contact with said outer cover, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
LEANDER K. ROYER.
Witnesses:
