A. KAISER.
LEAD PENCIL. No. 488,818. Patented Dec. 27, 1892.
- I gwumtoz TTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST KAISER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE EAGLE PENCIL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LEAD-PENCIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,818, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed November 1, 1892. Serial No. 450,663, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it. known that 1, AUGUST KAISER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and usefullmprovement in Lead- Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
The lead pencil in which my improvement is embodied is one in which the lead core is incased in a sheet of rhombic cross section the plane of juncture of the two strips which make up the sheath passing through two of the opposite parallel sides of the rhomb. It is this feature which characterizes my invention. The advantages derived from this construction are, that less sheath-material for a lead core of given size is required, thus reducing weight and bulk of pencil; the pencil'will lie flat in the pocket; the shape is one which makes the pencil convenient to the fingers; and the pencil will not roll off an inclined dies". or surface.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure1 is a perspective view of the pencil. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same.
The pencil is composed of a lead core A and a two part sheath 13B of wood or other suitable material. The two parts are so shaped that, when put together, the sheaththus formed will have the configuration of a rhomb in cross section-the plane of juncture a of the two parts passing through two of the opposite parallel sides of the rhomb, as shown plainly in Fig. 2. The sheath is grooved in the usual way to receive the lead, and its two parts are glued together as customary.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A lead pencil consisting of a lead core incased in a sheath of rhombic cross section the plane of juncture of the two strips which make up the sheath passing through opposite parallel sides of the I'llOlIlb as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST KAISER.
Witnesses: SAMUEL KRAUS, V PERCY H. BUOKMASTER.
