BED-SLAT HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,558, dated December 27, 1892.

To all whom, it Wtay concern:

Be it known that I, MARCELLOUS I). HAR- RELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raleigh, in the county of Smith and State of Mississippi, have invented anew and useful Bed-Slat Holder, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fastenings or holders for bed-stead slats, and the object thereof is to provide a cheap and elfective means for the purpose set forth, that can be readily attached to the supporting rail of a bed-stead and adapted to hold the slats in position and prevent spreading of theside rails of thebedstead, and with this object in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1, designates one of the side rails of the bed as shown and 2, the slats, which in this instance have vertical slots 3 extending through the ends thereof, said slots being centrally located and may be varied in dimension according to the use or size of the fastening or holder. To the under side of the end of each slat is secured a catch 4, consisting of a plate with an upper horizontal face and a lower beveled face running to an enlargement 5, at the outer end of the same. Extending across the outer end of the catch and through said enlargement 5, is a deep groove 6, whose upper wall 7, is rounded, and by this means is formed an outer flange 8, in direct vertical alignment with the end of the slat and having a lower straight horizontal edge 9, while the rear wall 10 of said groove, owing to the enlarged construction of the catch at this point forms an abutting or bracing flange. The flange 8 together with the end of the slat with whichit aligns, provides an extending abutting end which bears and braces against the rail when the two parts of the fastening or holder are united. The said catch is also formed with a central vertical slot 11, separating the groove 6, and forming straight side walls 12, and said slot aligns with the slot 3 in each slat and with the straight side walls 13 of said slot 3, form extended vertical bearing surfaces to prevent lateral movement of the slat when the parts of the fastening or holder are joined, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

The catches on the slats as set forth, are placed in removable engagement with keepers 14:, secured at proper intervals on the side rails, and consist of body plates having straight vertical outer faces 15, resting against the rails and inner beveled faces 16 extending upward at an incline to an upper enlarged or thickened end 17, where a rounded bead 18, is formed having a straight wall 19, on the inner side thereof against which the rear wall 10, of the deep groove 6,0f the catch is adapted to bear. At the outer termination of the bead 18, a short horizontal shoulder 20, is formed on which the horizontal edge 9, of the flange 8, of the catch 4, is adapted to bear, and by this means too much play of one part of the fastening or holder on the other is avoided and also the formation of crevices is prevented. The bead 18, is bisected bya vertical arm 21, which is of the same thickness as the entire thickness of the upper enlarged end 17, of the keeper, and is also of the same width or approximately the same width as the slots 3 and 11 in the slats and catches. The side walls 22, of the arm 21, are parallel with each other and arranged in vertical planes and extend downward to the horizontal shoulder, 20-of the keeper. These walls 22, are engaged by the united walls 12 and 13 of the slots 3 and 11 respectively formed in the slats and catch as aforesaid, and lateral movement of each of the ends of the slats is avoided thereby. The slots 3 in the slats are of about the same width and depth as the width and thickness of the arms 21, to thereby provide a close and neat fitting, as will be readily understood.

The catches and keepers are secured in position by any suitable means or arrangement of screws as shown and preferably constructed of galvanized iron, though other metals and materials may be employed if so desired. In applying or disconnecting the slats they are moved in vertical planes and it will be observed that a central pressure on the slats will not spring the ends high enough to become disconnected nor a lateral movement thereof cannot detach the same as the arms 21,which rise above the level of the slats prevent movement in this manner.

The device herein set forth has many advantages aside from those enumerated and will appear from time to time to those employing the device.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:

In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a slat having a vertical slot in the end thereof and opening outward therefrom, a catch secured to the under side of said slat consisting of a plate with an upper horizontal face and a lower beveled face running through an enlargement at the outer end of the same through which extends a deep groove parallel to the outer end of such catch and whose upper wall is rounded to provide an outer flange having a lower straight horizontal edge, said catch being also provided with a central vertical slot to align with the slot in the end of the slat to form extended straight side walls and a continuous vertical slot in the end of the slat, and a keeper adapted to be secured to the side rail of the bed-stead consisting of a body plate having a straight vertical outer face and an inner beveled face extending upward at an incline to an upper enlarged or thickened end where a rounded bead is formed having a straight wall on the inner side thereof and at the outer termination of the said bead a shorthorizontal shoulder, the said bead being bisected by a vertical arm of the same thickness as the upper enlarged end of the keeper, said keeper being engaged by the catch and forming a close joint therewith, substantially as described.
