FOLDING SQUARE.

SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 488,545, dated December 27, 18.92.

Be it known that I, ELIPHALET DE CAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark,.in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and Ato letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide asquare, capable of being folded together, thus occupying but a limited space in a tool box; simple and durable in construction and easily operated.

`The invention consists in the improved joining of the arms of the square, in its locking mechanism and in the combination and a1'- rangement of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures: Figure 1. is a plan view of the square and Fig. 2. an end elevation thereof, when folded together.

In said drawings d and b represent the arms of the square; provided with mitered ends c and d respectively. Said ends are pivotally jointed together by hinges e, in such a manner, that when the arms are folded, they will rest against each other, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. `The arm ct is provided with an inwardly beveled groove f, in which is adapted to slide and be guided therein a locking bolt g, adapted, to engage, when the square is in normal position, a correspondingly shaped groove h in arm b. In preference the length of the groove h is about half the length of the locking bolt g, the latter about equal to the length of groovefin arm Having thus described my invention, what Y I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. A square consisting of two arms mitered at their adjoining end and hinged together at said mitered ends, and a locking mechanism, adapted to hold said arms rigid in normal position, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a square the combination with the two arms mitered at their adjoining ends, and provided with grooves approximately at right angles to said mit-ered joint, of hinges arranged in said mitered joint, and a locking bolt, arranged in said groove, all said parts, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
