EXTENSION-TABLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,465, dated December 20, 1892i.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:

1 Be it known that I, JOHANN FRIEDRICH WIGGERS, of Ilanover, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Extension-Table, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved extension table, the extensible parts of which may be collapsed or withdrawn and iirmly erected without the aid of screws, wedges and the like.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter particularly described and defined in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure I is a plan view, part of the table top being partly broken away and the extension leaves at one side being shown withdrawn; Fig. II is a side elevation, partly in section on a line corresponding to the line A, B, Fig. 1; Fig. III is a transverse section on line C, D in Figs. l and 2; Fig. IV is a broken side elevation showing the extension leaves and their supporting legs partly withdrawn; and Figs. V, VI, and VII are detail views.

In constructing an extension table in accordance with my invention, a rectangular frame a is provided, supportedin fixed relation to the legs Z2, and on such frame a transverse strip c is secured about centrally thereof, on the top, said strip being formed with a slot or opening d for receiving a central bead or rib f, which depends from the under side of the table top e, and beads f at the ends of the top c. The strip c supports the top e, and the slot d and bead f permit vertical movement of said table top', while preventing longitudinal or lateral movement thereof. ing in the same vertical plane,but out ofthe same horizontal plane, for receiving and supporting the auxiliary legs q, q', provided for the opposite extension leaves as hereinafter described, said slats h and h', being about in line with the recesses or openings ot formed at each end of the frame d, as well as in line with the recesses gin the transverse center piece g.

At each end of the table double extension leaves c', k, t', 7c', are provided, adapted to be received beneath the table top e, when in the collapsed or inner position, and lying in the horizontal plane with and forming extensions of said table top when in the extended or withdrawn position, said extension leaves being withdrawn from the table proper, by successive movements as hereinafter explained.

On the inner edge of the inner leaves t' and t" are respectively formed or secured, the transverse beads or ribs Z, l', and from the said beads are supported the longitudinally ranging strips m, m', which are respectively connected at about their longitudinal centers to the said beads Z Z and serve as supports for the leaves i, fi', the said strips having support on the end members of the frame ct. The outer extension leaves Zn, Za, are provided with strips n, n', similar to the strips m, 'm' which extend from the outer ends of said leaves, inwardly beneath the same and beyond theirinner ends, through the ends of the frame a. The strips m, fm', n, n', are formed or provided at their under sides with stops o, 0, p, p', respectively, forlimiting their outward movement, the stops being adapted to bring up against the inner sides of the ends of the frame d. Near the outer ends of the leaves k, 7c', the auxiliary legs g, q', are hinged to fold upward and range longitudinally of the table beneath the top, said legs when in erect position beneath the withdrawn extensions being held rigidly between transverse cleats fr on the outer ends of the leaves 7c, 7c', and hinged brace iiaps s, s. At the inner edges of the leaves lo, 7a', spring catchest are arranged, andwhen the said leaves are moved in and longitudinally beneath the leaves t, i', between the same and the strips m, m', after the auxiliary legs q, q', have been folded, the said catches will en- IOO gage the beads Z, Z. Thus in operation, the auxiliary legs q, q', having been folded, and the leaves Za, Zt', moved inward beneath the leaves c', i', the table top c is raised and the leaves Z, 7c, and fi', 7c', moved inward simultaneously beneath the table top e, the legs q, q', entering the recesses ct, in the frame a and recesses g3 in the center piece g.

When the table is to be extended the pairs of leaves i', 7c, or i', Zc, or both are drawn out simultaneously beyond the table top c, whereupon the Weight of the table top e resting on the catches t, will disengage the latter from the beads Z, Z', and permit the leaves Zt, Za', to be slid out to the full extent, carrying with them the auxiliary legs q, q. When the auxiliarylegs are brought to the vertical position the flaps s, s', swing on their hinges and thus automatically hold the legs against folding Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-

The combination in an extension table, of a main table havinga central cross piece g provided With vertically spaced lateral projections, fixed guides and supports Zt, h', leading to said projections from the end pieces of the main table frame, the guides h beinginclined, and extension leaves having folding legs, said legs being guided by the supports ZL, h', and resting thereon when in the inner positions, substantially as described.
